Shaun stopped Halsey.


    She looked at him.


    After a moment, Shaun said, “Stop pping her.”


    He was telling Halsey not to strike Elise again. He was protecting her.


    Halsey pulled her hand back from Shaun’s grip with force, then sneered, “Whatever you say.”


    With that, she turned and walked away.


    Elise was ecstatic. She had purposely put on a show in front of Shaun, and she hadn’t expected him to step up and protect her.


    She knew nobody could resist a young, sweet girl like her.


    Elise even felt a little grateful to Halsey-because of her, Elise had been able to get closer to Shaun.


    In truth, these past few days as Shaun’s secretary, she was just that-a secretary. Shaun treated her strictly as an assistant. Besides work orders, they didn’t have much contact.


    Besides, Shaun’s personal secretary was still Martin. Elise hardly ever saw Shaun at thepany.


    Outsiders thought she was lucky-being Shaun’s female secretary sparked all kinds of rumors. But only Elise knew Shaun had no romantic feelings for her.


    That was why she hade to find Halsey today. And it turned out to be the right move. She and Shaun were moving forward quickly.


    Elise’s eyes sparkled with admiration as she looked at Shaun. “Mr. Lane, thank you for protecting me.”


    Shaun nced at her. “No need to thank me.”


    Elise continued with a pleasing tone, “I came from a rough background, and I’ve been on my own all these years. You’re the first person to stand up for me. I don’t know what I did to Ms. Mallin to make her p me twice, but you stepping up for me made me really happy.”


    The corner of Shaun’s mouth curled. “I said, no need to thank me. I’m not protecting you.”


    Elise blinked. “No, I know you’re protecting me. Don’t deny it-”


    Shaun cut her off, “I’m doing it for Halsey.”


    Elise froze, What?


    “She’s pregnant,” Shaun said. “I’m worried she’ll hurt her hand by pping you.”


    Elise froze, disbelief written all over her face.


    She had thought Shaun was protecting her, but now he said it was because he worried Halsey would hurt her hand.


    Shaun cared more about Halsey’s hand hurting?


    Elise felt like her brain was about to shut down.


    Shaun didn’t notice what she was thinking, and walked away to catch up with Halsey.


    Elise just stood there, speechless.


    That guy was crazy


    Halsey left the hospital, Shaun quickly caught up from behind, grabbing her wrist.


    “Why are you walking so fast? Come on, I’ll take you home.”


    Halsey yanked her wrist free. “I’m going home by myself. You should focus on your secretary. I just pped her, and she’s crying. You should go console her.”


    Shaun looked at Halsey and suddenly smirked. “Are you jealous?”


    He asked if she was jealous,


    Halsey’s eyshes fluttered.


    Shaun stepped closer. His tall, handsome figure cast a shadow over her.


    “I’m asking you-are you jealous that I hired a female secretary?”


    Halsey quickly answered, “I’m not jealous at all! You’re imagining things!”


    Shaun stared at her. He figured there was no way she would be jealous. He must’ve been overthinking it.
