Chapter 31
Liz had no intention of holding on any longer. After all, everyone who needed to know already knew. Zac and Xena came out of it with nothing but shame.
It was enough. She had finally let out that breath she had been holding in.
It wasn’t until Saturday that she heard from
She didn’t pay any more attention to th
situation. Her days were consumed by catching up on the mountain of work that had piled up during her week off. She was so busy she barely had time to eat.
that
Susan liad been hospitalized.
“I heard she got into a fight with the Lincoln family. The stress sent her straight to the hospital.”
“Liz, honestly… not marrying Zac might’ve been a blessing in disguise. With a family like his, even if you had married in, you’d just end up suffering alongside him.”
Liz sat on the balcony in a lounge chair, quietly examining her freshly manicured nails. She gave a soft “mm” in response.
Zac was the illegitimate son of David Lincoln, CEO of the Lincoln Corporation. Even so, he had never been truly epted by the Lincoln family, which was one of the four most powerful families in Stanley City.
Even after starting his ownpany and finding sess, they never saw him as one of their own. Compared to the Lincoln Corporation which had been publicly listed for years and had countless ventures at home and abroad, his tech startup seemed like a small–time hobby. It could never pose any real threat.
It was because of his status as an illegitimate child that her own family, the Smith family, had pressured her to break up with him when they found out about their rtionship. They even went as far as threatening to sever ties.
She had thought long and hard about it. In the end, she chose Zac.
And when he seeded in his business, she truly believed she had made the right decision. But over time, she realized just how deeply she had misjudged.
Some people could share the hardship, but not the sess.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Liz asked Jane if she knew which hospital Susan was in.
Jane sounded a little surprised. “Are you nning to visit her?”
“Mm. She’s always treated me kindly. If I didn’t know, that’d be one thing. But since I do, it’s only right to go check in on her.”
Jane sighed. “Hang on. I’ll ask my brother.”
A momentter, she replied with the hospital name and room number.
Liz was a bit surprised. “Your brother knows all that?”
“Hispany works with Voyager Tech. Once he heard about it, he asked his assistant to send over a gift.”
Liz knew Voyager Tech had been growing rapidly over the past few years and had formed partnerships with manypanies in the city. Still, she hadn’t expected it to be working with the Stone family.
The Stone family was one of the four most powerful families as well, with businesses all over the country. If Jack had made the effort to send gifts to Susan, that meant the partnership was significant.
Just as he had said he would, Zac had climbed higher and higher.
He just didn’t take her with him.
Liz didn’t feel regret. The man Zac had be was no longer the boy who once had eyes only for her.
“Alright, I’m going to change and head out. Talkter.”

After hanging up, she got up and went to the bedroom to change clothes. She grabbed her phone and car keys, then headed downstairs.
An hourter, she stood outside the hospital room holding a baske, of fruit and flowers.
She knocked.
A low male voice answered from inside. “Come in.”
Liz pressed her lips together and quietly pushed the door open.
Inside, there were only Zac and Susan.
Susany in bed, her face pale, an IV drip attached to her hand. Zac dressed in a suit, sat at her bedside, gently feeding her spoonfuls of soup.
When he saw Liz, his gaze lingered on her for a few seconds before turning away with a cold indifference.
