Reservation 34

When Liz saw that the call was from a client involved in next week’s court case, she turned to Naomi and said, “Naomi, go ahead. I’ll take this call.”

    “Alright.”

Liz stepped aside and answered. On the other end, Shannon Wilson asked if they could meet during lunch, saying she had some new documents to hand over.

Shannon and her husband had been college ssmates. They married shortly after graduating and had a daughter together. But when their daughter turned two, Shannon discovered he was having an affair with one of his coworkers.

She filed for divorce and requested custody of their daughter, but his family hid the child and refused to let her see her.

A mutual friend had introduced Shannon to Liz, and she had since trusted Liz to represent her in the case.

Shannon’s office was more than twenty kilometers from thew firm, and with only a one-hour lunch break, time was limited.

After thinking it over, Liz said, “Alright. Let’s meet at the cafe near your office at 12:30.”

“Perfect. Thank you so much, Ms. Smith.”

“No need to thank me. That’s what I’m here for.”

After ending the call, Liz slipped her phone back into her bag and returned to her desk to continue working.

At exactly 12:30 p.m., she arrived at the cafe.

Shannon was already there. As soon as she saw Liz walk in, she stood up and gave a small wave.

Liz made her way over and sat across from her. “You mentioned this morning that you had some new documents for me.”

Shannon nodded. “Yes, Ms. Smith. I finally got proof that he’s been abusing our daughter. If we submit this, will it improve my chances of getting custody?”

As she spoke, she passed a folder across the table.

Liz nodded as she epted it. “If this evidence holds up in court, there’s a strong chance the judge will rule in your favor.”

She opened the folder and reviewed the contents. When she finished, she looked up and said, “This can absolutely be submitted. It increases our chances significantly. How did you get it?”

Shannon bit her lip before answering.

“His younger brother gave it to me. My husband hits our daughter almost every day. His brother couldn’t take it anymore and started gathering evidence. Some of our neighbors are also willing to testify.”

As she spoke, her eyes began to fill with tears again.

Just imagining her daughter stuck in that house, suffering day after day, made her heart ache.

Liz gently pulled a tissue from her bag and handed it to her. “Don’t worry. I’ll submit the evidence as soon as possible and request an emergency protection order from the court. We’ll do everything we can to get your daughter out of there right away.”

“Thank you, Ms. Smith. I really appreciate it.”

“You’re wee. I have a meeting this afternoon, so if there’s nothing else for now, let’s wrap up here.”

“Alright. Please act quickly. The longer she stays with him, the more at risk she is.”

Seeing the pain in Shannon’s tearful eyes, Liz felt a wave of sympathy. She reassured her softly, “I’ll file everything this afternoon. We should hear back from the court within three days.”

    “Thank you.”

Liz carefully ced the documents into her briefcase and stood up to leave.

But just as she stepped outside the cafe, a man in a crisp suit abruptly stepped in front of her.

He had a square jaw, stood a little below average height, and carried some extra weight. He looked to be in his mid-thirties.

His expression was hard, and his eyes locked onto her with icy hostility.

“You’re Shannon Wilson’swyer, aren’t you?” he asked, his tone sharp. “What did she just give you?”

Liz had reviewed his photo when she first took on the case. She recognized him instantly.

    This was Shannon’s husband-Peter York.
