“d to hear it.”
After parting ways with Shannon, Liz headed straight back to the firm.
As soon as she stepped through the front door, the office assistant, Jenna rk, walked over with a message.
“Hi, Ms. Smith. Perfect timing. Mr. Quinn wants to see you in his office.”
Liz gave a quick nod. “Alright, I’ll head over now.”
Five minutester, Liz knocked on the director’s office door.
“Come in,” a voice called from inside.
Liz pushed the door open and stepped in. “Good morning, Mr. Quinn.”
“Good morning, Ms. Smith,” Warren Quinn replied with a friendly smile. “Come, have a seat. I’ve got something to discuss with you.”
His unusually warm tone gave Liz a vague sense of unease.
She sat across from him. “What’s the matter?”
“While you were away on vacation, we brought in a new intern,” Warren began. “He’s interested in familyw, so I was thinking it’d be a great fit for you to mentor him. Would that work on your end?”
Liz blinked in surprise. She had been at the firm for a few years now, buried in casework, and had never mentored an intern
before.
“What was his major in college?”
“He majored in civilw in college, so this is a perfect match for your expertise. That’s why I’m nning to have you mentor him. It’s just that he’s fresh out of college, so he can be a bit cocky and arrogant sometimes. If he says something rude, don’t take it to heart.”
Liz raised an eyebrow. “Mr. Quinn, do you mind if I ask-what’s your connection to this intern?”
If it were just a regr intern, Warren wouldn’t be going out of his way to exin all this.
Warren rubbed the bridge of his nose. “He’s not directly rted to me. He’s my friend’s nephew. But don’t worry. You don’t have to hold back. If he gets out of line, feel free to put him in his ce.”
Liz thought for a moment before answering. “Alright, I can take him on. But if he quits because he can’t handle the workload, that’s on him. I’m not adjusting my pace for anyone.”
She handled a heavy caseload every month, including pro bono work. Working under her was no walk in the park. Several assistants had already left because they couldn’t keep up.
Warren pped his hands together. “Great! If he really can’t handle it, I’ll reassign him. For now, I’ll bring him in to introduce you two.”
Warren stepped out and returned a momentter with a young man who looked to be in his early twenties.
He was wearing a ck leather biker jacket with the zipper left open, revealing a bold graphic T-shirt featuring a chaotic rock band design. His jeans were dark blue and torn at the knees, and he had on a pair of ckbat boots.
His short hair was dyed a trendy silver-gray that shimmered under the office lights. A small earring gleamed in one ear. His features were sharp, and his whole appearance gave off a defiant, rebellious vibe.
Liz took one look at him and blinked. “Is this guy really aw graduate?” she wondered.
She didn’t have a problem with dyed hair or edgy clothing, but this was a professional setting. Image mattered in this field. Clients expected their attorneys to look the part, and walking into a consultation dressed like that would instantly set off rmn
bells
As she assessed him, he was checking her out too.
The moment his eyesnded on Liz, Hunter Sanders looked genuinely surprised. She was a lot younger than he had expected. And she was stunning
He raised an eyebrow and turned to Warren.
“Uncle Warren, are you sure thiswyer who honestly looks younger than me can actually mentor me?”
