Reservation 49

After hanging up the phone, Liz put on a sheet mask and quickly went to bed.

The next evening, she drove over to the Golden Crown Hotel. Just as she reached the private dining room, she could already hearughter and cheerful chattering from inside.

She knocked lightly on the door. The moment she pushed it open, the room fell quiet for a brief second. Then a woman stood up in surprise and delight.

    “Liz? You really came?”

It was Tammy Fisher. She walked over quickly, took Liz by the hand, and led her to an empty seat beside her.

“Oh wow, it really is Liz Smith! When Ethan said you wereing to the reunion, I thought he was joking, I couldn’t believe it. It’s been forever!”

The guy who spoke had sun-kissed skin and a tall, athletic build. Even sitting down, he was noticeably taller than the others. He looked familiar, but Liz couldn’t quite ce his name.

Noticing her hesitation, Tammy leaned in and whispered, “That’s Tyler Zimmer. He was our PE rep in high school.”

As soon as she said it, Liz remembered.

“It’s been a while,” she said politely.

One by one, everyone in the room came over to say hi. Whenever Liz didn’t recognize someone, Tammy would quietly lean in and tell her their name.

Before long, the room was buzzing again with conversation andughter.

“Hey, where’s Ethan? It’s already past seven. Don’t tell me he got lost again.”

“He probably did,” Tyler said with a grin. “Back in high school, the guy got lost all the time. His house was just one bus ride away, but somehow, he always ended up on the wrong bus and had to transfer.”

He let out augh, then added, “But let’s be real. He did it on purpose. He just wanted to spend more time with the girl he liked.”

Liz had a feeling he nced her way when he said that.

Tammy leaned over and said, “By the way, I’m working in the city now. Let’s exchange contacts so we can meet up sometime.”

    Liz nodded. “Sounds good.”

They had just finished adding each other when the door opened and Ethan walked in.

“You’rete. That’s three penalty shots for you,” someone called out.

The moment he stepped into the room, Ethan’s eyes went straight to Liz. She was seated quietly in a pale pink wool coat over a cream-colored knit dress with a Peter Pan cor. Her makeup was subtle, just enough to enhance her delicate features. When she looked up at him and smiled, her eyes sparkled.

The sight hit him hard, as if something had punched him in the chest. His heartbeat quickened.

He quickly looked away and tried to steady his breathing.

Despite the jolt, he managed to keep his tone casual. “Sorry I’mte. There was a minor ident on the overpass. Two cars had a rear-end collision, and traffic got held up.”

As he spoke, he walked over and sat in the only open seat, which happened to be right beside Liz

“Alright, you’re off the hook this time,” someone said with augh. “But next time, no excuses. Three shots, no mercy.”

    Ethan smiled. “Fair enough.”

Without saying anything else, he reached over and quietly swapped the ss of juice in front of Liz with a cup of tea.

    Liz looked down, momentarily surprised.

She had never liked sweet drinks. Tea was always her go-to.

But very few people knew that about her. Only those she was close with ever noticed.

    How did Ethan know?

Was she just reading too much into it? Maybe it was just a coincidence.

Before she could make sense of it, Tyler spoke again from across the table.

“Wow, Ethan. All these yearster, and you still remember Liz doesn’t like sugary drinks?”
