Chapter 53
Liz nodded and didn’t press any further.
She stayed in the hospital room for a bit, then stood up and said, “I’ve got something to take care ofter. You get some rest. I’lle visit another day.”
Ethan looked up at her. “Alright. Be careful on your way back.”
“I will.”
Liz turned and walked out. Just as she stepped through the doorway, she heard Tyler’s annoyed voice from inside the room.
“See? And you didn’t want me to tell her. Turns out she knows, and she doesn’t even care.”
“Can you keep your voice down? I told you it was just an ident.”
“You’re the only one who thinks that!”
Liz didn’t stay to listen. She quickly walked away.
Once she got in the car, she scrolled through her phone and pulled Zac’s number out of her block list. Without hesitation, she hit call.
After a few rings, he picked up.
Zac’s voice came through, ced with sarcasm. “What’s wrong? Can’t keep up the act anymore? You called the cops on mest night, Liz. I’m not letting that slide so easily this time.”
“Zac.” Liz took a deep breath and asked, slowly and clearly, “Did you have anything to do with Ethan’s car ident?”
There was a short pause on the other end. Then Zac’s voice returned–cold enough to send a chill down anyone’s spine.
“You unblocked me and called just to ask that?”
“Yes. So tell me. Did you have anything to do with it?”
Zac let out a low, bitterugh. “And if I did, what are you gonna do? Call the cops on me again?”
When he saw her name pop up on his phone earlier, he actually thought she hade to her senses and was calling to make peace. He never expected it would be just to use him of causing Ethan’s ident.
If her goal was to piss him off, she definitely seeded.
“If you were involved, I won’t forgive you.”
Zac’s breath caught for a second. A wave of anger surged through him. For some insignificant dared to say that to him.
“Unbelievable,” he thought.
He let out a coldugh. “Fine by me!”

Before Liz could say another word, Zac hung up and mmed his phone down on the coffee table, scattering the cards in front of him.
“I’m out. Not ying anymore,” he said coldly.”

His expression was stormy, and the tension in the room instantly thickened. Jeff raised an eyebrow. “Seriously? It’s just a woman. Why are you getting so worked up? I thought you said you didn’t care about her
anymore.
“Shut up.”
Jeff had never been one to hold his tongue, and he wasn’t about to start now. “I’m just saying, I don’t get it. Do you care about her or not?”
If Zac still cared, why was he messing around with Xena?
But if he didn’t care, why had he been walking around like someone owed him a million bucks ever since the breakup?
Zac’s jaw tightened. “Of course I don’t care.”
“Then why are you so angry?”
Zac shot him a re. “She called just to use me of something. Wouldn’t that piss you off?”
Jeff leaned back in his seat, pletely unfazed. “If it were me, I wouldn’t even have picked up.”
But Zac had answered the second he saw her name on the screen. He didn’t even hesitate, didn’t care that they were in the middle of a game.
For a moment, it felt like the old Zac was back–the one who used to treat Liz like she was everything.
Sensing the mood shift, Rick quickly stepped in to break the tension. “Alright, Jeff, give it a rest. We’ve been ying cards all night. I’m wiped. Let’s call it.”
