Back then, Aubrey had loved Henry deeply.

It wasn’t because he would one day inherit the right to lead the Shadowmoon Pack. It wasn’t because of his handsome face. She simply loved him–for who he was.
Suddenly, she froze. Her hand pressed against her chest. Her heartbeat had quickened without warning.
Why? Was it only because she had thought of Alpha Henry?
The moment his name surfaced in her mind, the pulse beneath her palm quickened again, clear and undeniable.

Her sudden silence didn’t escape Wemble’s notice. But he didn’t press her. He simply watched her with calm patience. He was a healer who knew how to wait, how to let his patient speak when they were ready.
After a pause, Aubrey gathered herself and continued her story.
“I still remember–the activity fee was eight hundred fifty. The dress I wanted… if I rented it, it was only thirty–five a day. That meant I could use three hundred from the activity fee as a deposit. Even if I turned it inte, the teacher would let it slide.”
