As soon as Tiffany mentioned my sister’s phone, I hoped that when I turned around, I’d see her dangling it and I’d be able to snatch it from her. But when I finally turned to face her, she had both hands on her hips. I was a little disappointed, but I still intended to go back to her.
I returned to her with long and hard strides that made my heels click loudly against the marble floor, my heart pounding hard in my ears.
“Where the hell is it?” I asked, looking all around her body like she had it hidden somewhere.
She mockingly clicked her tongue while shaking her head at me. “Damn, talk about desperation. You’re probably thinking that I’ve kept it somewhere. That’s where you’re wrong. I’m not that considerate. I smashed it and dumped it in the ocean.”
“What?” My loud voice echoed through the hallway.
“Damn, take it easy or you’ll disturb the little one growing inside of me.”
I just wanted to yank her hair or something and the fact that I couldn’t do it made me grit my teeth. “How could you do that?”
She gasped dramatically. “How could I not do that?”
She sighed with satisfaction, crossing her arms again as she circled around me. “I enjoyed every second of smashing that damn phone. Wanna know a fun fact? Before I did that, I went through every app on it and now, I know everything about Anna, like whether or not she’s employed, her pathetic love life, actual home address and if she has any social life.”
The
way she said it all gave me no answers to any of the questions I’d had all along. It could’ve been one or the other.
“I know you’re dying of curiosity,” she said when she stopped circling around me and stared me down. “I’ll tell you everything. You only need to get on your knees and beg me.”
I longed for my sister more than anything, but not even that would make me get on my knees in front of Tiffany.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, my lips curving into a confident smile. “You’d really love it if I did that, but it’s not happening”
“Awwe on.” She pouted. “You know you want to.”
“Here’s the thing, I don’t need to hear anything from you. I only need to say the word and Maddox will set up a team to find out everything you know.”
She nodded, throwing her hands up in defeat. “Well, that’s your loss. On second thought, this is great. Until Maddox steps in, you’ll die inside every time you see me, knowing that I know everything about your sister while you know nothing.”

Sheughed with so much satisfaction in my face and kept going even as she moved backwards to get to the bathroom door.
Even though she was already inside, I could still hear her annoyingughter. Then, she hummed, like she was at peace while I wasn’t.
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath, telling myself it was all going to be okay, even when I couldn’t p her.
And with that, I opened my eyes and faced the other direction, wanting to leave that hallway before she would make her way out of the bathroom.
A few seconds after I turned at the corner, I gasped with wide eyes when someone suddenly pulled me from behind and into a room.
I didn’t even have time to process who had done that to me, but I was panicking, trying to fight my way out of their hold.
It was only when I looked in front of me and realized it was Grayson that I held my breath while he pinned me against the wall.
“It’s me,” he said quietly.
My heart should’ve stopped racing upon realizing that I wasn’t in danger and it was just Grasyon, but that was what made it race even faster. Not only was I trapped against the wall with his face so close to mine, his hands rested right around my waist and even when I was calm, he didn’t let go.
“You scared me.” I managed to say, ncing at the bedroom we were in.
“I just really needed to talk to you alone and thought this was my chance.”
His hand cement on my waist sent a shiver down my spine and I arched my back a little, wanting to melt into the feeling.
“You’ve not been returning my calls or replying to my texts. Why?” he asked in a troubled tone, his face so close to mine that I could feel the warmth in his breath.
His eyes scanned mine like he was searching for something and I just wanted to get lost in them. I should’ve ced my hands on his chest to push him away, but his hands on my waist felt like they were right where they belonged.
Finally mustering the courage, I shot him a re and said, “Get back.”
“Why? So you can run back to your new fucking boyfriend?”
He sounded so bitter that I was at a loss for words.
He must’ve picked up on my reaction as he quickly looked to the side, dropping his hands from my waist but not taking a single step back.
“Before today, you and I haven’t spoken since the incident in London. I had no idea Tiffany was up to something like that.”

I scoffed, watching his side profile. “Like that’s going to change anything. What’s done, is done”
“Had I known, I would’ve stopped it. I didn’t even see her with Anna’s phone at any point. On the day she traveled to London, she told me it was for a fashion event and-”
“It doesn’t matter.”
His head shot back towards me. “I’m telling you I had no idea and you’re telling me it doesn’t matter?”
“Fine, you had no idea. Good for you. But after you found out that she’d achieved her goal, what did you do about it?”
He pressed his lips together, looking to the side again as he finally took a few steps back.
“Exactly,” I said, trying not to raise my voice. “You know what? With each passing day, I understand you less and less. There were times at the dining table when you didn’t give a damn about me as you stood by your wife and mother–inw while they found ways to belittle me. And then the next thing I knew, you were getting ufortable when your mother–inw brought up my father. What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Look, over the past few weeks, I’ve said a lot of things out of anger and I didn’t mean them. I want this to work…you and I and this friendship we’ve had for years.”
I exhaled sharply, his statement pissing me off. I didn’t know what he wanted from me anymore.
“I never thought I’d see the day when you and Maddox would be official and you know what? You’re not a good fit. You can do better.”
“Not this again. I don’t need to do better. I’m happy with him.”
“Come on Harp. You know I couldn’t stand seeing you with him before and now that you two are together, it makes me feel worse.”
My heart skipped a beat and I wished that it meant he was jealous, but it didn’t.
“You’ve always known that Maddox is a yboy. Even now, you’re nothing special to him,” he said.
I furrowed my eyebrows. “That’s exactly what Tiffany said.”
“I know.”
“You know? Wait, you heard our conversation?” I chuckled painfully. “And you did nothing despite all the other things she said to me. Well, why am I not surprised?”
“That’s besides the point right now,” he waved his hand dismissively. “Which parts of the main house did he show you again?”
“What?”
He groaned. “Just answer me.”
I sighed. “The ground floor and first floor.”

He chuckled with satisfaction. “That’s exactly what I thought. You’re nothing special.”
“What does that mean?” I asked, offended.
“It doesn’t matter. That’s all I needed to know.”

His smirk bothered me so much that I went from being offended to being curious. What was I missing?
