    Freda, already seething, erupted. “I confess, my judgment was wed! But what about you? Always eyeing married women. It’s no surprise Elyse has turned away from you!”


    Theo abruptly stood, ring fiercely at Freda.


    Gavin quickly shielded her, taking on Theo’s wrath. He remarked, “Arranged marriages aren’t unusual among the elite. She was serious about you, chasing a genuinemitment.”


    Theo responded, “Then she should realize that love isn’t a given in an arranged marriage. It’s natural for me to have feelings for someone else.”


    Freda looked ready tosh out further, but Gavin quickly covered her mouth and ushered her away, clearly having something private to discuss with her.


    Elyse watched the tension escte and sighed. “Even though you two didn’t get together, there’s no need for such hostility.”


    Theo exined, “Freda and I have a history that makes us act like enemies now.”


    Elyse’s concern was evident as she asked, “I hope your disputes weren’t because of me?”


    “No, it was just our personalities shing, nothing to do with you,” Theo assured her.

    Theo smiled gratefully. “You always know just what to say to lift my spirits.”


    Elyse shed a knowing smile. “Well, I used to know you better than anyone.”


    Amused, he remarked, “I’ll make my exit once they return. It’s best I don’t linger here.”


    Elyse nodded, then her tone shifted to curiosity. “By the way, have you heard anything about Jayden?”


    After a brief pause, Theo replied, “Yes, I’m working on getting a message to him about your pregnancy so he can return soon.”


    Relief washed over Elyse. “Thank goodness he is okay!”


    Theo assured her, “Don’t worry about him. He’s managing better than you think. Focus on yourself for now, and he will be back before you know it.”


    Elyse nodded and offered Theo a warm smile. “Thank you. You’ve really changed a lot.”
