Implored 151

Jeffrey’s words caught everyone’s attention, and all eyes turned toward them. Reba’s heart sank. ‘He’s doing this on purpose,‘ Reba thought to herself.

“Should I keep it here, or do you want to take it yourself?” Jeffrey asked when she didn’t respond.

“I’ll take it,” Reba replied, casually taking it from him to make it look like the most natural thing. “Otherwise, Jane will me me.” Reba yed it off as if the key was just part of her work duties.

Jeffrey’s eyes were still fixed on her. Reba couldn’t help but feel her nerves on edge. She unconsciously tensed up.

Right now, if Jeffrey said this wasn’t apany key but her home key, everyone would start guessing about their rtionship. People might say something was going on between them, or worse, they might figure out they were actually married.

“You are so careless,” Jeffrey said, deciding not to expose the truth at thest second to save her from embarrassment. “You’re representing more than just yourself—you’re also representing Jane.”

“Understood,” Reba said, sounding obedient as ever.

Jeffrey didn’t say anything else. He told everyone to go find the one who was responsible for them, then left the gaming department and headed up to the CEO’s office on the eighth floor.

This time, aside from bringing Reba over, he’de to take a look at the branch and assess each department’s performance.

Stephen was in charge of the Honn branch. After Stephen pulled that stunt, Jeffrey figured it was time to take a closer look at his business abilities.

“All the managers and directors are waiting in the conference room,” Gregory reported, clutching hisptop. “Except for the gaming department, every department spoke to Stephen on the phonest night.”

Jeffrey asked, “How did Stephen react?”

Gregory replied, “He didn’t show any reaction. He just told everyone to give an honest report and let us do the inspection.”

Jeffrey wasn’t the least bit surprised by Gregory’s answer. Stephen was always meticulous in his work, never leaving any room for mistakes, and his ability to manage thepany was every bit as strong as Jeffrey’s.

The main reason Stephen lost out to Jeffrey in the battle for inheritance was that, at the time, Stephen had too many reservations and wasn’t willing to take risks, while Jeffrey, driven by stubborn resolve, took a bold leap.

In the end, Jeffrey secured the ultimate decision–making power in the Hanson Group.

The two of them were about to step into the conference room when Jeffrey’s phone buzzed. Seeing the caller, he picked up without hesitation. “What is it?”

“Boss, Richard just went to the Hanson residence,” Barry Lynch, one of Jeffrey’s bodyguards, reported, unable

to hide the excitement in his voice. “Should we move in?”

“Hold off until hees out,” Jeffrey replied, his gaze darkening. “And make sure he’s well looked after.”

Barry answered in a sh, “Got it.”

After hanging up, Jeffrey sent Riley Smith a message: [Log into the surveince cams at the Hanson residence -see what Richard talked about with Marcus and the others.]

Riley replied in her usualid–back tone: [Wouldn’t it be easier to tap in and listen?]

“This is still the country,” Jeffrey called her and exined seriously. “We’re not breaking anyws unless we really have to.”

Gregory and Riley were rendered speechless. They thought, ‘Then what about all those times we’d bugged conversations?‘

“Got it,” Riley said, and then hung up. For her, whether it was tapping audio or checking surveince, it was pretty much the same–it just depended on what Jeffrey wanted her to do.

Jeffrey tucked away his phone and stepped into the conference room. Seeing him walk in made the senior executives tense up, nerves on edge.

Even with Stephen’s reassurance, most of them still felt nervous that he might zero in on something they missed. After all, this was the top boss from headquarters.

Meanwhile, things were way more rxed over in Reba’s corner.

One of her roommates was all curious and gossipy. “Didn’t you say you went to catch up with a friendst night? How’d you end up over at Mr. Hanson’s office?”

“On my way back, Mr. Hanson asked me to print something Jane sent and deliver it to him,” Reba said smoothly, like it was the truth. “Then heined the files weren’t convenient enough and asked for the originals.”

Everyone looked around at each other, exchanging nces.

Reba carried on naturally. “I probably left the key at his office by ident when I handed over the USB drive.”

“The pros are here,” E interrupted with a grin, changing the subject before things could get any more awkward. “Let’s head over.”

“Yeah, ing,” Reba replied. With that, everyone broke off, heading out to find whichever pro they’d been assigned to.

Everyone had their own take on what happened. Some were convinced Reba totally left the key there on purpose, just to catch Jeffrey’s eye. Others bought her exnation and figured it was just an honest mistake.

And of course, there were a few folks who thought Reba and Jeffrey had something going on—after all, he didn’t need to go to all that trouble just for a key.

Whatever people believed, nobody said a word about it to Reba in the days that followed. Not asking her straight up didn’t stop anyone from whispering about it to their work buddies, though.

So, it didn’t take long before the whole Primey Technologies crowd caught wind of what happened. Even Jane and Lisa were in the loop.

Three of Lisa’s regr gossip partners cornered her as soon as the news spread. “Hey, what do you think is up between Reba and Mr. Hanson? Didn’t Andrea say something to you before?”

“Whatever’s going on is none of my business,” Lisa said, clearly not wanting to get dragged into more drama now that she knew the truth. “If you’re that curious, go ask them yourself.”

The three exchanged baffled looks, confused by Lisa’s attitude. Lisa didn’t bother with them anymore and headed back to her desk, focusing on her work.

Jane overheard bits of their conversation as she walked by, but since the rumors weren’t going wild, she didn’t bother stepping in.

Still, while taking a break from work, she sent Reba a message just to check on her. [Have you gotten used to things over there?]

Reba replied, [Yeah, I’m pretty much used to it.] Honestly, she really was. In the past, any time she moved to a new ce, her stomach would act up, she’d get headaches, or lose her appetite.

But this time around, she didn’t feel a thing–no difort at all.

Time flew by, and before they knew it, Wednesday rolled around. Reba and the others had picked up a ton of new skills and knowledge from the pros, but they all knew that practice was the key to really leveling up.

That night, the whole Primey Technologies crew stayedte to wrap up the assignments from the pros, just so the experts could quickly see where they were stillcking.

It was past eight o’clock at night. Reba was in the middle of her overtime shift when her phone buzzed–it was Jessica calling. ncing around at everyone still hard at work, she slipped into the break room to answer. “Jessica, what’s up?”

“Your mom just woke up for about a minute,” Jessica blurted out, practically vibrating with excitement. “Did Dr. Johnson call you about it?”

Reba’s heart surged with emotion–all at once, a tidal wave rolled through her chest. She nced at her phone, searching for any missed calls or texts, but there was nothing. “No,” she replied.

“He’s probably still tied up running tests on your mom and hasn’t had a moment to call,” Jessica said, her voice practically sparkling with excitement. “I feel like your mom might wake up soon after you’re back.”

So many feelings were crashing through Reba right now, barely keeping herself together. She tried to say something to Jessica, opening her mouth again and again, but joy gripped her so tightly that the words just

    wouldn’te.

“Reba? You there?” Jessica called out, worried when she didn’t get a response.

Reba managed a shaky sniff. “Yeah, I’m here.”

Jessica was still worried. “Seriously? Aren’t you losing your mind with excitement? Shouldn’t you be screaming like me right now?”
