Chapter 140: The Intoxicating Scent

Chapter 140: Chapter 140: The Intoxicating Scent

Cyrus looked at her with a deadpan expression, his eyes hard and cold, while Sara trembled under his gaze, trying to make herself smaller and hide as much as possible.

But he was not taking any of the hints to leave her alone. No, he could not. Not when his chest was restless, not when his mind was screaming for answers, and not when his wolf inside him was tearing him apart.

Justst night, he had been wandering in the pack ground when suddenly he caught it... a scent.

It was familiar, so familiar, yet unlike anything else he had ever known. A scent so intoxicating, so deep, it wrapped around him like chains of silk. It pulled him in, closer and closer, until he was submergedpletely, like his body was no longer his own.

The scent crawled into his skin, slipped into his blood, and made him rx in a way he had never rxed before. Every breath, every inhale, only made him crave more.

He wanted it. No—he needed it.

And when he was lost in his thoughts, he suddenly heard a whisper. It was from his wolf, Alex.

    "Mate."

Cyrus froze. His blood ran cold, then hot, then wild. His chest tightened. His breath caught. His eyes widened in disbelief.

    Mate.

    He had found his mate.

His whole body trembled at the word, at the thought. He could not believe it. For so long, he had buried the hope, telling himself fate was cruel, that the Moon Goddess had forgotten him. And yet here it was. His mate. His true fated mate.

A joy so fierce bubbled in his chest that he almostughed. His heart warmed, and his soul burned with happiness. He was already imagining how she would look, how she would speak, and how she would behave with him. He did not care about anything else. She was his. Made only for him. That thought alone was enough to shake him from the inside out.

His wolf growled in his head, demanding to run faster or to give him the control so he could chase her with all his might.

But Cyrus gritted his teeth. No. He wanted to be the one to meet her first. He could not let his grumpy wolf take over and scare her away with his wildness. He had to be calm. He had to be gentle.

So he ran. He ran with all the strength in his body, his heart beating so fast it felt like it would tear from his chest. Excitement burned in his veins, carrying him forward.

But then suddenly his heart dropped.

    The scent was fading.

He panicked. He ran faster. His legs pounded against the earth, his lungs burned, but still, the scent slipped further and further away, like sand falling through his fingers.

"No!" Cyrus growled, his voice cracking with rage and fear. His pace increased, but no matter how fast he went, the trail grew weaker, until...

    It disappeared.

Vanished into thin air, as if it had never existed.

Cyrus stopped, his chest heaving, his eyes wild as he searched the surroundings. His nose red, desperate to catch even the faintest trace. But there was nothing. Nothing at all.

He clenched his fists. How could it just disappear? How could something vanish without leading him anywhere?

Anxiety wed at him. His excitement turned into madness. His eyes darted everywhere, scanning the shadows, the wind, and the dirt, hoping for a clue.

    And then...

    He saw her.

A girl. Running with slow steps toward the omega quarters.

Cyrus’s breath hitched. The girl before him now was the same one he had seen that night. He had even approached her and cornered her. But even then, something hadn’t matched. The scent was not the same. Her scent was different.

And yet—when he looked at her, when he saw her trembling now, his heart still beat faster. Faster than it should.

He didn’t understand. But her scent... was not the same as the one that had intoxicated him.

Confusion burned inside him, mixing with frustration and hope. He wanted to grab her, shake her, and demand the truth. Had she seen someone? Was it her all along? Or was he losing his mind?

But the more she trembled before him, the more she looked at him with those big, scared eyes, and the more his heart twisted. He knew he was scaring her. He knew she saw him as some bad wolf cornering her, threatening her life.

    And yet... he couldn’t stop.

Sara looked at him with trembling eyes, her body shaking so much she could barely stand. Tears gathered and finally spilled, and she shouted with all the strength she could muster, her voice breaking in fear.

"Beta Cyrus! You cannot threaten me like this. You are threatening me! I am scared. Alpha Kael has said we can live here without any problem, but now you are scaring the life out of me! I am scared of you too. You should stay far away from me. I really don’t know anything! Stay far away from me!"

Her words came out in a teary voice, her body quivering, yet she tried to look as pitiful and beautiful as she could manage, hoping it would soften his stone face.

Cyrus stared at her. He searched her trembling figure and her tear-filled eyes, but he found no proof, no clue, nothing he could hold against her.

She was either truly innocent or a cunning girl hiding something so deep he could not dig it out yet. His chest burned with suspicion, but he knew pressing more would get him nowhere.

With a low growl stuck in his throat, Cyrus finally stepped back. His heavy boots echoed against the ground as he put distance between them.

His mind screamed to demand more, but his pride forced him to pull away. He would not break down before her. No, he would find out the truth in his own way. He could always track her, watch her, and wait until her mask slipped.

Sara’s shoulders sagged with a sigh of relief. Her heart pounded wildly, and for the first time in what felt like hours, she breathed.

Finally, this madman is leaving me. She did not understand why he was behaving like such a jerk when she hadn’t even seen anyone. Why torment her like this? Why corner her until her tears fell like rain?

She was not like Selene, who could throw a punch at a wolf and make him run. No. She was nothing like that. She didn’t have such high confidence. She could not challenge a beta of a powerful pack.

All she wanted now was for this crazy wolf to leave her alone so she could go back to her room, curl under her nket, and breathe in peace without this anxiety wing her chest.

But before leaving, Cyrus turned his head, his sharp eyes cutting through her like a de. A cold smile curved his lips as he spoke, his voice low but heavy like thunder.

"If I find your lie...that you really did not see anyone that night...then be prepared to face the consequence."

With that, he straightened, his head held high, and walked away.
