Charlie’s words struck a chord with Nanako Ito, making her realize that she had never truly qualified as a martial artist.
“Even though I’ve won a world championship and been recognized as a top young master globally, I still don’t grasp the essence of martial arts,” she reflected.
Watching her weep like pear blossoms in the rain, nearly copsing under the weight of her emotions, Charlie sighed and said, “I apologize if my words were too harsh. However, I hope you cane to understand what the true spirit of martial arts entails.”
With her eyes filled with tears, Nanako Ito looked up at Charlie, her gaze intense. Kneeling on the ground, she implored, “Mr. Wade, please rify this for me. I ask you to guide me!”
Charlie didn’t extend his hand to assist her but spoke earnestly: “The essence of martial arts is not measured by physical strength, but by the strength of the heart.”<h3 style="background-color:DodgerBlue">
“Someone may be weak, yet possess a strong heart; they embody the true spirit of martial arts. Take your master as an example. Despite his arrogance and overconfidence, he at least faces the consequences of his failures. In that regard, he surpasses you.”
With a heavy heart, Nanako Ito replied, “My master even attempted suicide today. If he were still capable, I believe he would have chosen to end his life…”
Charlie nodded in agreement. “This demonstrates that while he may be weak physically, his heart remains strong. Deep down, he hasn’t betrayed the identity of a martial artist, and you…”
As he assessed Nanako Ito, Charlie added seriously, “At this point, you’re not suited for martial arts practice. My advice is to return to Japan after thispetition, focus on your university studies, and consider pursuing further education or starting a family. Embrace a life of normalcy.”<fncbef> Readplete version only at find{n}ovel</fncbef>
With red eyes, Nanako Ito responded earnestly, “But…I truly don’t want to abandon martial arts!”
Charlie replied calmly, “If you’re unwilling to let go, then you must find a way to strengthen your heart.”
“Mr. Wade, how can I develop inner strength?” Nanako Ito asked, desperation in her voice.
“It’s quite simple,” Charlie exined. “First, you need toe to terms with your master’s fate. epting that is the first step toward cultivating a strong heart; seeking justice for him is the second.”
Nanako Ito quickly waved her hand, “Mr. Wade, I never intended to seek revenge for my master. I know that I’m no match for you, and I understand that my master’s oue is not your fault…”
“Exactly,” Charlie confirmed, nodding thoughtfully. “Recognizing that you cannot me me shows you’re making progress. Your master’s situation is a result of his own choices. Thus, I advise you not to burden yourself with guilt. If you feel pity for him, care for him when you return to Japan.”
Nanako Ito nodded vigorously. “Master Wade, I understand!”
Charlie replied, “Good. As long as you grasp that, we’re making headway. It’s gettingte; you should head back now.”
“Mr. Wade, may I ask one more question?” Nanako Ito urged.
“Go ahead,” Charlie said.
“Mr. Wade, would you consider taking me on as a disciple?” Nanako Ito inquired.
Charlie answered without hesitation, “That’s impossible.”
“Why?” Nanako Ito pressed. “Is it due to myck of qualifications or because I’m Japanese?”
Charlie was candid in his response, “Primarily, it’s because you are Japanese. For centuries, the Chinese have taught the Japanese, only to be met with ingratitude. In modern history, Japan has been an adversary to China, causing harm to the Chinese people. As the saying goes, one learns wisdom from experience. Therefore, I will never pass on Chinese martial arts to a Japanese individual.”
In that moment, Nanako Ito felt a wave of shame wash over her.
For the first time, she was embarrassed to be Japanese.
