Mia couldn’t quite understand it, but the moment sheid eyes on Charlie, all the resentment and me she had been harboring vanished in an instant.
When Charlie offered her an apology, she found herself feeling a bit embarrassed.
She felt this way because Charlie had traveled such a distance to save Arman, yet his father was willing to sacrifice Arman’s life for his own reputation.
In this situation, the lines between right and wrong were clearly drawn.
Charlie, who had always disliked being indebted to anyone, felt a sense of relief now that they had both spoken openly. He turned to Mia and said, “Miss Mia, now that this matter is behind us, let’s start fresh and turn the page.”<h3 style="background-color:DodgerBlue">
“Okay,” Mia replied softly, recalling how Charlie had mentioned the snack street to his father earlier that afternoon. Curiously, she asked, “Mr. Wade, why did you bring up the snack street? Does my dad have some other ns?”
“Yes,” Charlie confirmed. “Mr. Liu intends to redevelop this area into amercial center.”
Mia was taken aback. “What exactly did he say to you?”<fn2b6c> This text is hosted at f?i?n?d?n?o?v?e?l?</fn2b6c>
“He was quite enthusiastic when he described his vision for this ce,” Charlie exined. “I believe he’s almost made up his mind. I took this chance to suggest he take control of the snack street directly. The future is in his hands; it’s up to him whether to stay or go.”
Mia gazed into Charlie’s warm eyes and gently inquired, “Why are you doing this?”
Charlie replied casually, “This snack street holds significant sentimental value for you, and it deserves to be preserved. Your father certainly doesn’t need the money; even if thend appreciates substantially, there’s no real reason for him to demolish and redevelop it.”
As he spoke, Charlie sighed. “But you know how wealthy people think. They are never satisfied, always chasing after more money. If I hadn’t intervened, I fear he might have really gone ahead with demolishing this ce. Once it’s gone, the memories tied to it could be lost forever.”
Mia felt a wave of gratitude wash over her. She looked at Charlie and said softly, “Thank you…”
Charlie offered her a small smile. “You’re wee. I can rte to your feelings. After my parents passed away, I often found myself visiting the old neighborhood where we used to live. Sometimes, even after a long day of work, I would ride my bicycle to check on the construction site nearby. If it were to be demolished, it would be incredibly hard for me to ept.”
Mia was taken aback. “Mr. Wade, you worked at a construction site?”
Charlie nodded. “Yes.”
“I started working at various construction sites right after graduating high school at the age of 18 and continued for six years, doing civil engineering and decoration work.”
Mia was astonished and puzzled. “But your family is so well-off! Why would you want to work on a construction site? Your grandfather and your family are incredibly wealthy. My dad says your grandfather is ranked among the top three richest people in the world. Why would you choose to move bricks after high school?”
Charlie responded calmly, “Their wealth is theirs. I told you before, after my parents passed away when I was eight, I lived in a welfare home until I graduated from high school at eighteen. When I left the orphanage at twenty, I started working at the construction site to support myself.”
Mia listened intently, nodding slightly. “When I was upset with you, I thought you were lying about everything. But now, looking back, it seems you were honest with me. Even if you couldn’t share everything directly, you only revealed what was necessary, without deceiving me.”
