Back Where 16

    Zephyrine

    Finished

The music was soft, yet every beat pulsed like a warning drum. The coronation had begun, but even with dancers twirling and goblets raised. I could feel his gaze burning, focused, unrelenting.

    Apex

I didn’t dare look at him. Not with the storm it stirred inside me. Not with the strange pull that made my heart stumble.

Instead. I kept my eyes on the goblet before me, fingers barely brushing the rim.

Then a voice boomed above the murmurs.

“All hail the Lycan Heir. Before he is crowned, does anyone wish to offer a toast?”

I lifted my gaze slowly. An older man stood at the front with eyes like dull coins, a calcting grin stretched across his face.

“He is Apex’s uncle, Lord Dareth, Alpha Aeudric whispered beside me. I gave a slight nod. I hadn’t known Apex had an uncle.

Just as I was lowering my gaze again, a voice sliced through the air like honey over steel.

“I would love to make a toast to the new king,” Ka purred, her smile dazzling. “And I have… a question.”

Heads turned, marveling at her elegance, her boldness, her knack for twisting moments toward herself, always.

“What question do you have for him, Envoy of the ckbridge Pack?” the advisor asked, indulgent.

Ka lifted her goblet, not to the king, but to me,

“Why would the new Lycan King invite a rogue to his coronation?”

    A hush fell.

Dozens of eyes shifted from her.. to me.

My spine straightened. Slowly, I looked up and met her eyes. So this was her move. No proof. No trial. Just abel. Rogue.

Under the bright sun, in front of every Alpha and noble, she meant to disgrace me

I turned my head toward the Ash Pack table. Jurrek was already frowning and I know He would interfere if I didn’t answer right.

Tension thickened like smoke, and just before I could speak the crash came.

The throne room doors exploded inward, splinters flying like shrapnel.

Guards snapped to attention too </bte.

They came barreling in. Real rogues. Blood–soaked, wild–eyed, dripping with the scent of violence.

“APEX!” thergest one roared, baring ckened teeth. “How dare you not invite Rogue Town to your coronation? Disrespect means death!”

Silence mmed down, heavier than before. Ka was forgotten. Everyone’s focus shifted to the real threat.

Rogues. Unimed werewolves without a pack had breached the Lycan Kingdom. That alone could ignite war.

Iturned at <bst to Apex. He sat ahead, regal on the throne, the golden crown still untouched beside him.

And yet his eyes were only on me. Even now, under threat. As if he had been waiting for me to look.

When I did… he lowered his gaze and frowned slightly as though annoyed it took me too long to give him my attention.

Power, Calm even in chaos. He didn’t flinch. Didn’t lift a finger. Didn’t speak and that infuriated the Rogue Alpha.

“Oh, so you disrespect me more with that silence,” he snarled. “Then don’t me me for sending you to your dead father!”

Apex’s eyes finally rose. Slowly. Coldly. His face remained unreadable, but I saw the shift.

“You should’ve invited the rogues, the Rogue Alpha hissed, stepping forward. “Sent a scroll like you did to the packs.”

Then came the de. Drawn fast. Gleaming red.

“Now pay for it with your life.”

Guards rushed in, but he was fast. Brutal. He spilled the first blood with a single sh and one of the guards fell, throat open.

Gasps rang out. Everyone realizing the truth.

    This wasn’t a show. He wasn’t bluffing.

He stepped toward the steps, and Ka darted forward, arms spread to block him.

Wait!” she cried, locking eyes with him.

    The Rogue Alpha snarled

“Who are you? Have you chosen death? Or will you die for a king who is not your kind?”

“I am Ka Yadev,” she said proudly. “From ckbridge. I’ve visited Rogue Town. I’ve spoken with

    Please. This isn’t the way.”

    A pause. Murmurs. Even awe.

I saw Nyroth. He watched her with pride. His mother and sister, the same.

So this was it. Ka’s moment to shine.

I nced down at my goblet but then got brought back to reality by a Crack.

The angry grunt snapped us back. The Rogue Alpha shoved her aside like wind swatting a leaf

“Bullshit with your name and peace talks. Apex dies today”

He charged.<fn1239> Th?s chapter is updated by find?novel</fn1239>

This time, Jurek moved, swift, firm, stepping into his path.

Ash Pack didn’t stand down. Not for our kind. Not for strangers. We protect. Always

The Rogue Alpha growled low, jaws clenched.

    you before for peace.

“I know you,” he said coldly. “But I won’t stand down for a Beta. Maybe if your Alpha had shown but word says he died in battle. Never returned.”

A chillnced through me. My fingers clenched tight, too tight on the goblet and it cracked in my grip, wine dripping with the blood on my palm.

I hadn’t realized I was holding it that hard.

1 set my jaw, Loosing my patience.

“Speak filth about the Alpha of Ash pack once more and loose your head.” Jurrek challenged and Gasps echoed.

The Rogue Alpha turned slowly, eyes dragging over Jurrek with a smirk.

Stand down if you value your life. It’s Apex’s blood I came to spill.”

In the blink of an eye, he lunged at Apex, de aimed straight for the kill but before Jurrek could react, a shadow dropped from behind Apex, silent, deadly.

    Steel shed.

In a single, precise thrust, the rogue Alpha was cut down, his blood spilling across the floor onto the crown and the throne room went dead silent.
