Nyroth

My horse stopped in the courtyard, and Kai rushed forward to hold down the reins while I alighted and headed into the house without a word.
What I had heard and seen jolted me more than anything ever could. I had known Zeph for five years, and never once had I seen her weaken or lie sick in bed. It felt so strange, so utterly wrong.
I walked through the living room, bypassing my mother and sister without speaking. I had to hurry. This was the moment to show how much she truly meant to me.
I pushed open the door to my bedchamber and went straight to my wardrobe to gather my clothes when my mother entered, her eyes scanning the room and me.
“You seem to be in a hurry,” she said. I paused, letting out a long sigh. “What is going on? Nyroth?”
I copsed onto the bed, exhausted. At that moment, Kai and Olivia also entered, their faces filled with
concern.
“Zeph is sick, Mother,” I said. “She… she is so sick that she can’t even speak properly, and it breaks my heart.”
Confused nces were exchanged between them.
“How do you mean? Isn’t she the one who killed an able man seven days ago at the arena?” Kai asked. I nodded feebly.
The poison… I already knew where it came from. I swallowed hard, meeting their eyes.
“Mother, a healer was called, and she knows the cure.”
“And which is?”
“The flower located at the Empire’s Grove.”
Dead silence fell. I watched the color drain from my mother’s face and Olivia’s too.
“How do you mean?” Kai finally asked, seeming to recover from the trauma he’d sustained at Apex. “We all know the Empire’s Grove is a ce of no return. Why would you even think of going there?”
“Exactly, brother,” Olivia added, horrified. “This pack needs you. I need my brother too. Why would even consider going?”

“For starters…” I began angrily, “Zeph is my mate. She is the woman the Moon Goddess fated for me. Surely you won’t advise me to stand aside while she rots and dies, right?!”
“I wouldn’t advise my own son to watch his mate die,” my mother said softly. I swallowed hard. “Any werewolf from Hue Pack is fated to only one mate in a lifetime. You are the Alpha here, Nyroth. You deserve a Luna.”
She approached and sat beside me, taking my hand gently, holding my gaze.

“The Empire’s Grove has its story, and no one who ventures there ever returns. The flower to cure every illness is located there, but no one has ever brought it back home. For such a journey, you must go for someone who means so much. But let me ask you, Does Zeph mean that much to you?”
My breath hitched. She shook her head as she continued.
“She is a rogue, Nyroth. A skillful killer. You saw what she did at the arena. How she drew arrows at the Lycan Kingdom the other night. She is dangerous, a trained assassin before she wormed herself into your life, all because of the mate bond. She is nothing but… look at Ka. She is even the daughter of an Alpha now. She is in love with you. She is smart, ready to be yours. Tell me why you would leave all that behind to die for someone who has cheated on you?”
I blinked, lowering my gaze and swallowing hard.
“I… I cheated on Zeph many times, Mother, and… and Zeph onlyy with Apex after I agreed to the rejection.”
“That doesn’t justify her dirty deeds. She is worthless, useless, barren. She is nothing but a rogue assassin. You are an Alpha, Nyroth. She shouldn’t even have a ce in your heart or your life.”
“But… but Apex…” I swallowed again. “Apex left quietly after hearing the location to find the cure.”
“See?” Olivia chipped in. “He will definitely forget about her now. Who in their sane mind would go there?”
The question hadn’t even cooled when the sound of a carriage stopping in the courtyard reached us. Minutester, approaching footsteps followed, and the door opened.
Ka Yadev stood in the doorway, dressed more elegantly and gracefully than ever, like the daughter of an Alpha she is.
“I came as soon as I heard. Are you okay, Nyroth?” she asked, rushing toward me. I pulled away and walked to the window to breathe.
Silence fell after my reaction, and I heard them all leaving until the door closed.
“I heard she copsed, and she is now on her sickbed.”
“On her dying bed, Ka,” I corrected, my gaze settling on her. “I saw what you did the other night at the duel. You gave that rogue something to cheat with.”
She said nothing, looking at me silently. I expected an apology or at least some remorse, but instead, she shrugged.
“It’s a win–win situation, Nyroth.”
“What?!” I eximed in horror, rushing to grab her arm. “Zeph is my mate. Why would you poison her?”
“Because she dares challenge me!” Ka snapped, jerking her arm free from my clutch. “I am Ka Yadev, Nyroth. No one disrupts my ns. Whatever I want, I get. You, or anything else I will have it. Besides, this mate of yours didn’t even care you existed.”
“She loved me,” I gritted out. “She only went astray when she saw me fucking you the other day.”
Silence fell between us. Slowly, she walked toward me and ced a palm t on my chest.

“She is going to die, Nyroth. You can’t save her. No healer will find a cure.”
“One has,” I said, and she stared at me in awe. “The Lycan Princess. She is one of the most skillful healers I have ever seen.”
Ka pulled away, a small frown on her face.
“Who would have thought the Lycan Kingdom would also have a healer? A rare treasure?” But then she shook her head. “She only know the cure. She won’t be getting it.”
“Ka…”
“You are not going to the Empire’s Grove, are you?” she asked. The eagerness I had felt earlier seemed to wane. I swallowed hard, watching her shake her head again. “It’s a fool’s errand. You won’t die for Zeph, will you?”
“She is my mate.”
“And I am your lover, Nyroth,” she countered. “I am your first love. We havee a long way. I am the Alpha’s daughter now. I will stand by you, love you more than Zeph ever will. This body is yours. Will you leave it all behind to die for just… a rogue?”
Heavy silence descended. I replied softly.
“Zeph helped me build this pack to what it is now, Ka. When you left me, she filled the huge hole you left behind. I can’t watch her die.”
“Then don’t go to her. That way, you won’t have to watch her die. The news will only reach you, and I promise it will be a painless death.”
“L..”
“I need you too, Nyroth. I have cramps. Will you let me wallow in pain alone?”
My heart sank at her question, and in silence, I stared at her graceful figure, standing right in my way.
