The silence that fell between us was deafening. I sat across from her, staring right into those beautiful eyes, knowing full well that anything I said now mattered. That it would shape our rtionship for tonight and for the rest of whatever time we still had until all secrets are revealed.
I watched how she took in the revtion that demons were wee in the Lycan Kingdom. Then she pulled back, narrowing her eyes at me, her voice low with anger.
“I didn’t know you Lycans supported demons in the war. No wonder you didn’t participate in the battle.”
I didn’t answer. I only stared at her, silent, and that seemed to frustrate her more.
“I’ve always wondered why the Lycans never fought in the war. Why it was only the Ashmere who received the Imperium order. Now I know. You locked your gates like a…” She cut herself off, but something red inside me. Not anger exactly. Something deeper, darker. My body tightened with it.
“Not all battles make it to history, my Queen,” I said, my voice low but unyielding. “And just so you know Lycans don’t follow or obey Imperium orders. Only the King has the right tomand.”
She swallowed hard, then nodded.
“Good. Then thank you for telling me where you stand. Since I clearly don’t matter to you.”
The path she was steering us down made me sigh.
“I’m not choosing sides, Zephyrine.”
“It’s clear you are. Maybe it’s because of that war general you speak of so fondly, as if you shared something more than words. The demons are evil. And it was the Ashmere who saved this shifter empire from them, while you Lycans hid.”
“Point of correction,” I cut in sharply. “The demons are not evil and we never hide. As much as I hated my father, I respected the fact that he didn’t just sit around and stare. We received orders too. I do.”
Her eyes widened, stunned by the firmness in my tone and revtion.
“Demons are nt evil. They’re certainly not. Trust me. They only follow a different culture, abide by differentws not like yours or mine. Don’t call them evil. In your pack, in every pack, there are evil men. Take my father, for example. He’s evil, but he isn’t a demon. He’s a Lycan. The same with werewolves. Some are good, some are vile. The Demon Realm is no different. Their warriors follow orders, just as you Ashmeres did.”
Silence fell again. I saw her expression shift.
“You sound like you know them too well,” she muttered, suspicion threading her voice. “How do you know my brother?”
The question hit the air heavy, sharp.
“How do
you know my father was a warlord? Or my mother? They were dead before I was even ordered to

I couldn’t answer. My jaw tightened, my chest constricted. I remembered that first battle. the one not led by Xyrrha but by my brother, who would have fallen if I hadn’t arrived.
I lowered my gaze, then leaned back in my seat, fixing my eyes on hers.
“I admire the warrior in you, Zephyrine. I respect the Ashmere for pushing the demons back. But don’t mistake me. Demons are not viins. They strike, yes, but they’re no more evil than the men you bow to.”
Her lips parted, her chest rising with uneven breath. My wordsnded, and yet she said again.
“You love her, don’t you?” she whispered suddenly, as if the thought had been wing at her all along. “That war general who sought refuge here. She was your type, wasn’t she? Just like you too. Different. Strange. Weird.”
I raised a brow at that word.
“I’m weird?”
“Don’t twist my words.”
“That’s what you meant. I’m weird?”
She red but said nothing. Then she sighed, lowering her gaze, her shoulders tight with fatigue.
“Let me ask you two questions, Lycannar,” she murmured. “Are there still demons in the Lycan Kingdom?”
My throat locked. The truth pressed against my ribs like a de. Should I tell her the one before her carried demon blood?
“My father made a portal that sent them back to their realm,” I replied instead. She nodded slowly.
“And what was your rtionship with her?”
“We are not talking about Xyrrha,” I said softly.
That was it. She rose abruptly and stormed toward the exit.
“Zephyrine?” I was on my feet, panic rising, following her down the stairs. “Zephyrine!”
The dining hall air was heavy when I cut in front of her. My sisters still sat at the long table, their eyes watching everything as she descended in fury.
“Will you calm down?” I asked, my voice tight.<fn57bd> Latest content published on find?novel</fn57bd>
Her answer was a shove to my chest, hard, but useless. I am stronger than she will ever be.
“Get out of my way, Lycannar. I’m leaving your kingdom.”
She tried to bypass me, but I blocked her path again. When I reached for her hand, she pped it away, eyes zing.
“You loved her, didn’t you? You had something with her. Tell me now!”

Her fury was a storm, but her eyes, gods, her eyes burned with possession. Fierce. Demanding.
I gave a slow, pained nod.
“We had a rtionship.”

The moment the words left my lips, she broke. She moved to storm past, but I caught her wrist. She twisted, fast as a de,unching a strike. I caught it, her momentum slicing air as I deflected. She countered with a kick, but I intercepted and pressed her against the table, pinning her firmly yet gently.
Her breath was hot, her jaw set in defiance. She shoved me again, hard, but I held.
“So what?” she hissed, her voice trembling with rage. “Are you in some long–distance love with her now? Am I the mistress in your life?”
“Zephyrine, stop.”

“I won’t stop until you…”
??
Her words cut when I crashed my mouth to hers. Hot. Possessive. A war of tongues and teeth. She kissed me back like she would burn me alive, shing into me, consuming

me.

When she finally tore back, she was panting, wild–eyed.
I exhaled, shaky, pulling her into my arms, hugging her tightly, burying my face in her long hair.
“Stop calling yourself a mistress,” I whispered against her ear.
She stiffened, then pulled back to search my eyes.
“Then what am I? Who am I to
you, Lycannar?”
I cupped her cheek, brushed my lips softly over hers in a iming kiss.
“You’re going to be my wife. Whether the Moon Goddess wills it or not.”
Her breath hitched.
“Lycannar…”
“Stay tonight,” I begged softly. “Let’s talk this through. Stay with
. I miss you too damn much.”
She searched my eyes again. Then finally, softly, tenderly, she kissed me. When she turned and walked up the stairs, my chest eased just enough for me to breathe.
I raked a hand through my hair, exhaling hard.
“Judging by that disy, you didn’t tell her about the spear you took five years ago,” Mearez’s voice rang out softly. I turned to find her and Serena watching me.
“We will keep it a secret,” I muttered darkly. “Deep secret.”
Serena’s brow arched.

“Does that mean… you killed…”
“The Ashmere murdered the Abyss,” I cut her off, my tone low, almost broken. “My brother Hades was dying at their mercy. He is Warlord of the Demon Realm. Did you really think I’d stand by and watch?”
The sisters exchanged a look, tension rising. Mearez sighed finally.
“And if Father finds out your woman is an Ashmere?”
Father. My stepfather. The Demon King.
I lowered my gaze, jaw tight.
“I’ll send Chantel with my words. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
