    A soft shuffle of footsteps snapped me from my thoughts. I sat up, eyes fixed on the door. After a few seconds, it opened gently, and Kai stepped in. Without a word, he approached the curtain, parting it before turning to me with an unsettling nce.

    I exhaled slowly, though unease still gnawed at me.

    “Maybe this is my chance to prove my worth to Zeph… whatever she’s done to anger the Imperium Council. But what if… what if she’s in over her head? And what if Apex is involved?”

    By the time I finished and stepped toward my waiting carriage, I saw Ka’s carriage passing by, bearing the crest of ckbridge Pack. I felt a prickle of unease. Somehow, I felt she was involved in this too. Chaos never happened without her hand in it. So much for the empire’s envoy of peace.


    “Let’s go. Kai. Let’s go so I can save the day,” I said brightly, trying to mask the storm within me, unaware of how much this encounter would test me and Zeph beyond anything I could imagine.
