Back Where 208

    Zephyrine

The sky parted in that moment and everything turned into a blur. Rain began to fall. Suddenly, as heavily as ever, the sky cried and in it, Lycannar’s horse surged forward.

On his steed, he gripped one of his des and hurled it ahead, forcing me to intercept and step aside so it could cut through the rope strangling my neck, freeing me.

In a rush, his hand stretched out. I caught it, and with a powerful swing he lifted me onto the horse behind him. I clung to him perfectly.

Lycannar should have ridden out now, but I held him tight to stop, and he obeyed. He listened.

“How about we do what you wanted? Set this ce aze… so no one will ever go through what my brother did?” I whispered, and in response, he stirred the horse around, facing Stone and the armies now gathering.

There, behind Lycannar, on the horse with him, nothing ever felt so powerful, so safe.

“I was supposed to take the leader myself because he dared to touch my woman.” He spoke over his shoulder, and in reply I hugged him tighter.

“Let me make that vengeance, my love. He dies with Varyn’s sword. The rest of his armies and guards… let’s burn them alive.”

He didn’t hesitate. He obeyed my words. Dismounting from the horse, Lycannar strode toward Stone, who gritted his teeth, sword clenched in hand.

“Fight me like a man,” my kingmanded.

But Stone snarled. His eyes slid toward me, seething.

“She is the one I have a problem with. If I must ughter anyone, it’s her.”

Rain poured over us, dripping down my body. From the shadows, ves and residents crept closer, desperate to witness how this would end,

I turned, seeing Varyn leaning on my horse, barely alive. Dismounting, I stepped forward to face Stone.

“Fine. Let’s have a fight. If I win, these people here will be set free, and ckwater will burn.

But if you win… not only will my brother return to that underground, I will also be your

    whore.”

I felt Lycannar’s energy surge behind me, but I was grateful he kept his possession in check. He only walked back to his horse, folding his arms, waiting, though I knew he would interfere if I faltered.

Stone, feeling belittled, stepped closer, rain washing over the filth of his body.

“Fine,” he spat. Then he barked an order. “Bring the barrels of oil!”

My heart clenched. Oil barrels ready to ignite this ce if I won. They were dragged forward, waiting.

Without warning, Stone swung his sword. I countered, our des shing, his pressure heavy, pressing down, testing me.

I gritted my teeth until the sight of Varyn swaying half–dead on the horse shed in The sight of the enved people suffering.

    my mind.

A savage punch flew at me with all his might but I waved it off just in time, forcing Stone off bnce. With that opening, I struck back with the very swiftness Lycannar had once asked me about.

He had asked in Ash Pack how fast I could be. Now I answered him with action.

    This fast.

My de whirled, slicing Stone at the side of his stomach, not deep enough to kill, but enough to weigh him down.

Mercy? That is far from me.

With Varyn’s sword, I pulled out and drove it straight into his chest, bursting through every vein that kept him alive. I didn’t stop. I stabbed again and again, until he coughed blood, raised his eyes to me onest time, and copsed at my feet.

“Stone!” one of his captains cried in horror, drawing his de. Others followed, fury shing, rushing at me but in retaliation, the ves snapped.

One by one, all of them, once beaten, broken, now roared in unison. They surged at the warriors, scattering oil from the barrels, turning chaos into revolt.

    Pandemonium.

I staggered back until Lycannar’s steadying hand caught me. His palm caressed my waist, grounding me gently.

“Let’s get out of here,” he murmured, and I nodded, swallowing hard.

He strode to a burning post, snatched a torch, and brought it to me.

“Go on,” he whispered in my ear. “Burn it all down. Not the ones enved, but the men who tried to keep you from your brother.”

As though under his spell, I raised the torch, lowering it slowly toward the ground but paused. The people were still fighting, still entangled with soldiers. If I dropped it now, they too would

    burn.

    I couldn’t. I wouldn’t be a mass murderer.

“Every one of you, go! Use the gate now and save yourselves!” My voice rang through the courtyard, pulling the people back from their frenzy.

    They froze, turning toward me.

“Take everything you can… his riches, his wealth, all of it. Leave. You are free from ckwater!”

Another eruption. Chaos surged again but this time with purpose. ves became looters, plundering the fortune of their captor, storming toward the exit.

The warriors, stunned, turned to me in fury.

“You are a mere woman. You won’t leave here alive,” their leader sneered, stepping closer with sword raised.

But I lowered the me. Oil caught.

    Fire spread.

The barrels ignited, and ckwater became a furnace.

“Who said I am a mere woman?” My voice was low, steady. “I am an Alpha. An Ashmere, And the King’s woman.”

mes roared. I stepped back. Lycannar was ready. My horse waited.

As the people fled through the gate with stolen wealth, Lycannar guided me to my saddle. He helped me mount behind Varyn, who slumped weakly, then mounted his own horse.

Together, we galloped out of ckwater but before I leftpletely, I nced back.

Stone’s body was engulfed in fire. His legacy turned to ash.
