“Destroy the amulet ne Apex gifted her. Break the connectionpletely between them. That way, she will never remember him even if she sees him… unless the love she has for him is beyond heaven’s will and hell’s rage, which I seriously doubt.” Lady Sylvara’s words echoed in my mind, and I had done it.
After I stole it and exchanged it with the one Lady Sylvara had given me, I destroyed the true one that Apex had sped around Zeph’s neck.
Earlier today, something happened that went beyond my understanding and everything I thought I stood for. She coughed out blood.
That made me begin to doubt the whole amulet and the idea of forced love. It was as though her body itself, her very soul, was convulsing, battling against the spell that bound her to me.
She had passed out since then and hadn’t woken. Staring at her sleeping form on my bed, I realized one tangible truth.
She had never slept this peacefully here before. Instead, she had loved the small, damp room across the hall, the one I had cruelly dumped her into.
My heart ached for it. For her. For the way I had treated her so badly, so meanly, like she was nothing. I regretted it all. If only she could give me her heart again, I would be everything and more than Apex could ever be.
How could I prove I loved her? How could I keep her not by force, but by her own will?
Those questions gnawed at me as the sky rumbled again. I looked up toward the window and saw the clouds still gathering.
It seemed the rain would fall tonight, and I wondered what it would bring. Chaos or bliss.
She had carried the scent of Lycans when she arrived, which meant she had spent the night with him. Would hee here to take her? No. He wouldn’t dare.
The door opened softly, and my mother appeared in the doorway. She paused a moment, then stepped further inside.
“Is she still asleep?” she asked quietly.
“She isn’t sleeping, Mother. She’s passed out. Unconscious. I don’t know what’s wrong with her.

Lady Sylvara never told me she would cough blood. Is this how she will be all the time?” My voice broke with panic before I realized it, until my mother asked me one sharp question.
“Would you rather let her go to Apex, then?”
That question pierced my mind and sparked anger and possession. I reached for Zeph’s hand instinctively, giving it a firm squeeze.
“She is mine, Mother. No one else’s.”
No sooner had the words left me than she stirred. Slowly, she fluttered her eyes open. I went still, moving closer, waiting for any reaction.
Her eyes widened, blinking as if trying to remember where she was and how she had here.

Then she turned to me, and I swear I forgot how to breathe. Those eyes, so beautiful, fixed on me, and against all odds, she smiled.
Whatever sorrow and hardship I had carried all my life vanished in that instant. She looked at me as though she loved me, and I would give anything for this every single day.
“Zeph?” I called softly, my palm lifting to her cheek, cautious, praying she would not pull away. To crown it all, she smiled brighter.
“Nyroth.”
I turned to my mother in awe, and in response she rushed forward to ask Zeph tenderly,
“My dear, how do you feel now? Any pain?”
Zeph went quiet for a moment, testing her body. Then she shook her head.
“I feel fine. Totally.” She looked back at me and sighed. “What’s wrong? Why do you look so surprised?”
“Uh… me?” I stammered, climbing onto the bed to sit beside her. My mother, unable to contain her delight, said brightly,
“I will leave you both to yourselves.”
She gave me the signal, and I swallowed hard. Then she departed, closing the door softly behind her.
I shifted my gaze back to Zeph, and she was still staring at me, full of attention and, to my
shock, with the same wanting she once had, the one I had been so foolish to reject.

“Zeph,” I whispered desperately, lowering myself onto her, my palm cupping her cheek.
I nced at her lips, and she waited for me, her eyes fluttering closed. Emotions swirled inside me as I lowered my lips toward hers, almost scaling the moment when suddenly the sound of my pack’s gate mmed open, making me shudder.
I frowned immediately, rage bubbling. Who would dare barge into my pack this way, to interrupt such a moment? Whoever it was would pay with their life.
“What’s wrong?” I heard Zeph murmur as she opened her eyes to look at me again. I dipped lower, my lips brushing her neck, but then came the crash of my guards being hurled against walls, and I froze.
Wait. Who is here?
I rushed from the bed to the window. A bolt of lightning split the sky, and in the white ze, his form appeared.
Apex Blood.
He was here. For her.
I staggered backward in shock, my heart mming against my chest. If he was here, what could he do? Zeph was mine. Clearly in love with me now. Wasn’t she?
I turned back to the bed. She was sitting up, confusion in her eyes. Then she walked slowly to the window, and when her gaze fell on the King standing beside his powerful ck horse, she froze.
Her eyes changed. In that instant, I saw it clearly. Her soul might have been stolen by me with a spell, but Apex Blood owned it entirely through love.
I could not lose her. Not now. Not to him.
With him watching below, I moved behind her, unzipping her dress to bare her shoulders, pressing my lips against her skin and by the gods, that was the most fatal mistake I ever made.
