Invitation 16

Nathan didn’t understand why Edward was so upset. After giving it some thought, he realized it was

    because…

“She could have told me directly! Why did she have to tell you instead?!” Edward roared.

Why go through his assistant? Would it kill her to call or text him?

Nathan stared nkly ahead, his silence speaking volumes. He wondered if the method ofmunication really mattered that much and if it was worth Edward flying into a rage.

    He didn’t get it.

Why was Edward so desperate to find her if he didn’t love Macie? But if he did love her, why would he sleep with another woman and hurt her so deeply?

Meanwhile, Macie declined the concerns of her fellow patients in the ward. She just wanted to be left

    alone.

What she had told Nathan was the truth. Out of respect for Yosef, she wouldn’t expose Edward and

    Sharon’s affair.

Besides, she would be gone in just 25 days. As long as the couple didn’t provoke her again, they could do

    whatever they wanted.

Edward waspletely out of it the entire afternoon. He either zoned out in meetings or signed

    documents incorrectly.

Nathan watched as yet another file was tossed into the trash, followed by Edward’s coldmand to reprint it. With no choice, Nathan obediently did as he was told.

Fortunately, these weren’t documents that required signatures from multiple department heads. He’d be the one getting yelled at otherwise.

In the office, Edward irritably threw down his pen and leaned back in his chair before staring nkly at

    the ceiling.

How did Macie know aboutst night? His shirt cor had covered the marks on his neck, so how did she

    see them at a nce?

    Or… had she gone back?

But why was she so certain that the other woman was Sharon if she had?

His gaze sharpened, and his brows furrowed as he picked up his phone to make a call.

As soon as the call connected, a voice filled with joy and surprise rang out from the other end.

“Ed, why are you calling me now? Do you want to-”

Before she could even finish her sentence, the cold voice from the other end interrupted her sharply. “Did you tell Macie about what happened between us at the hotelst night?”

Sharon’s grip on her phone tightened instantly. She had expected Macie to argue with Edward and had already prepared a response.

However, Edward’s tone caught her off guard. He sounded furious and even intimidating.

“I… I just told May to leave the door open for you…” Sharon’s soft and cautious voice was tinged with fear.”

Ed, are you mad? I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything…”

Hearing her timid response, Edward suddenly snapped out of his anger and gradually calmed down.

So what if Sharon had told Macie? He didn’t love Macie anyway. The one he truly loved was Sharon.

“I’m not mad. I was just asking,” Edward exined, his tone lightening up.

Hearing his voice return to the familiar, gentle one she knew, Sharon slowly rxed. Then, she

deliberately added, “You were so mean just now. I was scared…”

“I’m sorry. I just…” Edward started to exin, but the words got stuck in his throat.

He wondered what was wrong with him. He didn’t know why he had gotten angry or why he had snapped

    at Sharon.

He nked out for two seconds before hastily adding, “I was just worried that it might affect you if the

news got out. You are nning to enter the entertainment industry, aren’t you?”

“Oh, so you were worried about me! It’s okay, Ed.” Sharonughed. “May isn’t the kind of person to

deliberately ruin me. She wouldn’t post anything online to harm me.”

Her words implied something else. If any rumors did surface online, she could easily pin it on Macie,

even if she had been the one to spread them herself.

Sharon smiled slyly as calction and triumph filled her eyes.

“You didn’t forget about my runway show tonight, did you?” she asked.

    “I didn’t,” Edward replied.

“Good! You have toe, okay? If you don’t, I’ll be mad and ignore you!” Sharon pouted yfully.

Edward agreed, and after a few more casual exchanges, they ended the call.

In the dressing room, Sharon’s expression turned cold as she stared at her phone, her eyes dark with

malice. She recalled the moment when Edward had hesitated while exining his anger.

Her teeth clenched as she muttered, “May… Edward still cares about you after all.”

Meanwhile, Edward, in the CEO’s office, reflected on why he had snapped so suddenly. Ever since he left the hospital, he had been struggling to control his mood.

But he couldn’t figure it out. He didn’t have the time to dwell on it. His assistant had just ced a freshly printed stack of documents before him.

This time, he signed them without error.

As Nathan watched the process go smoothly, he silently thanked the heavens.

“I’m leaving work on time today. If there’s anything important, report it to me via phone,” Edward

    instructed.

“Understood, Mr. Fowler,” Nathan replied obediently.

Just as he turned to leave, a chilling voice rang out from behind him. “Are you and Macie close?”

Nathan felt a deep, instinctual fear run down his spine. Every fiber of his being screamed that admitting to anything right now would be career suicide.

Turning back with a serious expression, he answered, “I only interact with Mrs. Fowler when necessary

for work, like when I retrieve documents from your house. We’re not close. At most, we are simply

    acquainted.”

Edward’s gaze darkened further. “Then why did she only answer your calls?” 1

Nathan wondered if Edward was jealous. He found thetter’s expression terrifying.

Thinking quickly, he calmly replied, “Mrs. Fowler likely assumed that it was a work–rted matter since I

am your assistant, sir. That’s why she didn’t make things difficult for me. I called her several times before

she finally answered. I believe that even while upset, she didn’t want to interfere with your work.”

    It was a perfect response.

As expected, Edward didn’t press further. The tension in the room dissipated, and with a dismissive

wave of his hand, he allowed Nathan to leave.

Once outside, Nathan exhaled sharply as he stood there. Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and deleted every message between him and Macie. <fn57f4> Discover more novels at find[?]ovel</fn57f4>

If Edward ever saw the texts where Macie mentioned that she was being more considerate because of

    Nathan’s workload…

Nathan probably wouldn’t live to see another day.
