Invitation 39

    Chapter 39

When Edward brought Sharon home, Macie was already busy in the kitchen.

Edward walked in, stood close to Macie, and watched her roast vegetables while sneakily stealing a piece of braised beef. Their bodies were almost touching.

Sharon clenched her teeth as she watched from the doorway. She didn’t know if it was just her imagination, but she thought that Edward seemed to be getting closer to Macie ever since she returned.

“May, what are you making? It smells so good!” Sharon smiled as she walked in and squeezed between them. “Seriously, Ed. How could you make her cook right after she got back? You’re treating her like a maid,” she added, pretending to stand up for Macie.

Macie remained indifferent. She picked up on Sharon’s disguised mockery.

“It’s her duty to cook,” Edward replied matter–of–factly.

“I bet you don’t like my cooking! Poor you. Having to eat what I made while May was in the hospital for two weeks,” Sharon teased.

“Nonsense. Your cooking is fine. But now that Macie is back, cooking is her job again. Go change your clothes,” Edward responded.

Macie had no interest in their back–and–forth. Without saying a single word, she flicked her spat, sending a shrimp flying in the air.

Edward, who noticed this from the corner of his eye, quickly pulled Sharon aside before the oil sttered

    on her white dress.

“Can’t you be more careful?” He frowned at Macie.

“My apologies. The spat was too light. The kitchen is small, so please take your conversation elsewhere,” Macie replied coldly.

Edward led Sharon out. As they walked away, their conversation could still be heard in the kitchen.

“Ed, May didn’t mean to do that. The spat was the problem, really. Don’t overthink it.”

“You wouldn’t know! Stay away from her. She poured hot soup on youst time.”

Macie coldly smirked when she heard this. It never failed to amaze her how the despicable couple could alwayse up with new ways to frame her.

When dinner was ready, Edward took the initiative to serve mashed potatoes. He pulled out a chair for Macie, and poured her a drink.

Sharon watched from across the table as Edward attentively served Macie first before pouring her own

drink second. She pouted and yfully whined, “I’m on my period and can’t drink anything cold. Ed, could you make me some ginger tea?”

Edward immediately got up to make it.

Sharon turned to Macie and shot her a triumphant smile.

However, Macie ignored herpletely. A man like Edward was only valuable to Sharon. To Macie, he was already utterly worthless trash. She got up to wash her hands in the bathroom.

Meanwhile, Sharon sneaked into the kitchen and discreetly sprinkled some white powder into the food. <fne8ca> ???? ????s? ???????s ?? FιndNovel</fne8ca>

When she returned, she cheerfully scooped a spoonful of braised beef for Edward.

“Ed, try this! May made it just for you,” she said sweetly.

Before eating, Edward reminded her to avoid cold drinks and keep warm.

Sharon’s heart warmed at his concern. “Ed, you’re such a caring man. May is really lucky to have you.”

Edward frowned slightly. He had never said anything like that to Macie before.

He turned his head slightly to gauge Macie’s reaction, only to see her remainpletely indifferent. Not

a trace of sadness was to be found.

He only stared at her, seemingly in disbelief.

“Ugh… It’s so salty…” Sharon suddenly gagged and spat out the food, frowning.

As Edward immediately looked at her, Sharon gave him an apologetic smile.

“Sorry, I probably prefer milder–tasting food.”

“But I tasted it earlier, and the seasoning was just right,” Edward said before taking a bite himself. A secondter, he, too, grimaced and spat it out.
