Invitation 81

“I’m sorry, Sharon. I got a little carried away just now,” Edward muttered.

Sharon nced at the red marks on her arm and pretended not to know what had happened. “What’s going on?”

Edward slumped back onto the couch, his head hanging low in defeat. “Macie. She’s gone.”

“Macie’s at the hospital, isn’t she? Are you still drunk from lunch?” Sharon asked, feigning confusion.

“She’s not at the hospital. The nurse said she checked out yesterday morning,” Edward replied.

“What? Really? Neither of us knew about that,” Sharon replied in surprise.

“Her room is empty. All she left was the phone I bought her and…” Edward’s voice trailed off.

    “And what?” Sharon pressed.

Edward clenched his fists, his jaw tightening. “A pile of useless paper. A photocopy. Did she really think that would scare me? She’s such an idiot!”

Sharon frowned. A photocopy? What was that supposed to be? Shouldn’t it have been the divorce papers?

She stood up and walked into Macie’s room, her heart racing when she saw the shredded pieces of paper scattered across the floor.

Did Edward tear up the divorce agreement? Did that mean the divorce was off?

Panicked, Sharon knelt to pick up the pieces, her mind racing.

She thought, “I should’ve hidden it. I should’ve waited until the 30–day cooling–off period was over before bringing it out. What do I do now? If Edward’s copy is destroyed, the divorce won’t go through. Does that mean that Macie wille back? When will I ever get to be Mrs. Fowler?”

“What are you doing?” Edward’s voice suddenly came from the doorway, startling her.

“I… I saw trash on the floor and wanted to clean it up.” Sharon turned around, forcing a smile.

“That’s not trash. It’s Macie’s little prank,” Edward said coldly.

“She thought that she could scare me with a stupid photocopy. Does she think I’m as dumb as she is?”

Sharon heard the word “photocopy” again. She examined a piece of the shredded paper and realized that the printed part didn’t reveal much. However, when she looked at the signature area, she realized that the agreement was a photocopy. <fn0162> Follow current nov?ls on find?novel</fn0162>

It truly was just a photocopy. So, where was the original? Had Macie hidden it? Did she not want the divorce after all?

Sharon thought that Macie was such a schemer. She couldn’t believe that Macie had yed her like this!

She clenched the piece of paper in her hand, her eyes narrowing with anger.

“Do you have her phone number? Call her,” Edward demanded.

Sharon didn’t want to make the call, especially not in front of Edward. If she did, she wouldn’t be able to berate Macie properly.

But Edward was already walking over, so Sharon quickly turned away and pulled out her phone to delete all her messages with Macie.

Before Sharon could say anything, Edward snatched the phone from her hand and scrolled through her contacts, only to find no trace of Macie’s contact number.

“Edward, you scrolled too fast. Let me do it,” Sharon said, her smile sweet as she snatched her phone. She quickly added Macie’s number and dialed, putting it on speaker.

Shortly after, a cold, automated voice answered.

“Macie must have blocked me,” Sharon said innocently, though inside, she was seething.

Inwardly, she thought, “Macie, you’d better hope I never find you, or you’ll regret it!”

Even though Macie didn’t answer Sharon’s call, Edward wasn’t ready to give up. He asked Sharon to send a message instead.

Fortunately, Sharon had already deleted the message history. As for social media, she simply told Edward that Macie had deleted her as a friend a while ago. Edward had no choice but to drop it.

As he walked away, Sharon followed him and asked, “Edward, have you eaten dinner yet? Do you want to go out for somete–night snacks?”

However, Edward didn’t respond. He walked into the master bedroom and shut the door firmly behind

    him.
