Invitation 83

    Chapter 83

Edward snapped out of his thoughts, flipped the tablet face down, and grabbed the files before heading

    out.

As he walked, his mind kept reying the videos and photos of Macie. He couldn’t help but wonder how amazing Macie was. He didn’t know how he had never noticed it before.

But Edward could guess why. Macie had always been at the top of her ss in high school, so it was no

surprise that she shone even brighter in college.

Although they had attended the same college, their majors were different. Moreover, he had been with

    Sharon back then.

Looking back, Edward felt like he had missed out on four whole years of Macie’s life–years when they had been in such close proximity.

A wild thought even crossed his mind. What if he hadn’t been with Sharon back in college? Would he

    have fallen for Macie?

Edward’s fingers curled involuntarily, but the meeting had already started, forcing him to push those thoughts aside.

The meeting ended two hourster, and it was time for lunch. Nathan had ordered food.

Edward hadn’t eaten since the night before, and though he was starving, the sight of the food did nothing

    to whet his appetite.

For some reason, everything seemed to remind him of Macie–even the bowl of soup before him.

The soup was too rich and overloaded with seasoning. Macie’s soup, on the other hand, had always been light and subtly sweet.

Edward tightened his grip on the spoon, his lips pressing into a thin line. A wave of self–disgust washed

    over him.

He wondered if he was now unable to eat anything unless Macie made it.

He figured that if Macie found out, she’d probably gloat and act even more spoiled. Lately, her temper had been getting worse. He couldn’t let her get too full of herself. <fna4c3> The source of th?s content is f?i?n?d?n?o?v?e?l?</fna4c3>

Edward scoffed and downed the soup in a few quick, angry gulps.

Despite not sleeping all night, Edward’s energy seemed endless. He skipped his afternoon nap and continued poring over Macie’s records.

He watched every video two or three times, even digging up information about her elementary school and her homeroom teacher. At that point, he knew her life story inside and out.

By two in the afternoon, it was time to get back to work, but Edward’s eyes remained glued to the tablet.

“Mr. Fowler, these are the documents that need your signature and approval this afternoon,” Nathan said

    as he walked in.

When he noticed the fatigue on Edward’s face, he asked, “Did you not rest at all during lunch?”

Edward ignored the question. “Any news?”

Nathan hesitated for a second before nodding. “We checked with the service provider. Mrs. Fowler removed her phone card, which is why her phone appears to be unreachable. Perhaps she’s just taking some time off to clear her head. She mighte back on her own in a few days.”

Edward’s expression darkened. “Then why didn’t she tell me beforehand? What kind of person just disappears like that? Does she respect me at all?” (1

Nathan couldn’t help but retort, “And did you care about Mrs. Fowler when you brought someone else

    home?”

Edward froze, then red at his assistant. Nathan took a cautious step back.

“To be fair, you were in the wrong here. What you did was essentially cheating,” Nathan said, bracing himself for the fallout.

After all, if he couldn’t find Macie, he’d be transferred anyway. So, he figured that he might as well speak

    his mind.

“I didn’t! Sharon and I never did anything physical!” Edward snapped.

Nathan’s ears rang from the outburst, and he stared at Edward in surprise.

No physical rtionship? Then what about those hickeys from two weeks ago?
