Chapter 55

Olivia gave her hand aforting squeeze. “Rx. I’m just going home, not disappearing into the wild, Honestly, you’ve got nothing to worry about. You should be resting. If you push yourself too hard, I’ll be the one taking care of you instead.”

Grace still wasn’t convinced. She mulled it over for a long time, but couldn’t help but feel uneasy about it a

“Alright, if you won’t let me go, at least let Scan go with you. That way, I’ll feel better,” Grace said, pulling Sean over with a serious face. “He might be a bit clueless, but he’s got muscle. He’ll watch your back.”

Olivia just gave Sean a sideways nce. “He sleeps twenty hours a day and is always sneaking snacks. If he doesn’t make a mess, I’ll count my blessings.”

Sean just nodded along, totally lost about what they were talking about.

“You’ve seen the DNA test results yourself, so what’s left to worry about?” Olivia continued, reassuring Grace. She gave Sean a look. “The Evans family’s been stirring up troubletely. Sean, you need to stay and guard the house. Don’t let anyone cause problems.”

Sean’s face lit up at the mention of the Evans family. He shot Olivia a sharp, eager look, as if he was ready to cause some serious trouble for the Evans family.

After talking it over, Grace gave the couple a call.

Grace said, “Olivia’s a thoughtful girl. She knows it wasn’t easy for you toe all this way. In the next couple of days, she’ll find some time to go back with you for a visit.”

Olivia motioned for Grace to switch the call to speakerphone. Even through the line, they could feel the barely restrained energy radiating from the couple.

“Is this really true?” Gina stammered, her voice full of disbelief and emotion. “We… we just hoped Olivia didn’t hate us. We never imagined she’d actually agree toe back with us. Is this really happening?”

Olivia smiled gently. “Really. I want to check on my little brother.”

“That’s wonderful, Bobby will be so happy to see his sister,” Gina said, her voice breaking as she choked back

    tears.

She thanked Grace again and again. “Ma’am, we really can’t thank you enough for raising Olivia to be such a good kid. You’re a real lifesaver for our family.”

Seeing Grace about to get all emotional again, Olivia took the phone and said with a smile, “No need for that. When are we leaving?”

“There’s a bus leaving tomorrow at one in the afternoon,” Gina said, her voice full of excitement.

“Great,” Olivia said, and then hung up the phone.

She rested against the doorframe, her expression unreadable. At first nce, she might have looked wistful— but there was no nostalgia in those sharp eyes, only quiet assessment. That faint smile of hers hid something

    sharper beneath.

On the other end, Gina’s expression changed as soon as the call ended. “That girl’s really hard to fool f Cheryl hadn’t been smart enough to fake that document ahead of time, there’s no way we could’ve tricked her.

Donald took a long drag on his cigarette, blew out a smoke ring, and gave a wild grin. “She’s actually pretty good–looking. Just giving her away like this feels like such a waste.”

Gina saw through his intention and punched his arm hard. “Don’t even dream about it,” she hissed, eyes shing. “Devin wants her untouched. You ruin this payday for me, and I’ll personally make sure you regret it.”

Donald winced in pain, knowing he was in the wrong, and nodded. “Alright, I get it.”

“I don’t know what it is, but I’ve got this uneasy feeling,” Gina muttered with a frown, snatching the cigarette from Donald and taking a long drag.

“That girl was asking all kinds of questions today. She’s really clever. Once we hit the road, you better keep a close watch on her,” she added.

“We’ve been at this for years and never had any trouble. You really think we’re gonna get taken down by some little brat?” Donald sneered.
