Olivia slowly opened her eyes, her fingers unconsciously clenching as she brushed her hair away from her temple. “My head hurts a bit,” she said.

Donald crushed out his cigarette and shed a knowing smile. “Ten hours on the road will rattle anyone’s skull. Take a walk–some air and movement will clear the fog right out.”

Gina helped Olivia from the truck and echoed, “Your father’s right. Long rides take getting used to. Let’s walk it off. And believe me, you’ll perk right up after dinner.”

Olivia nced over. “Who are we eating with?”

“With our family, of course. We’ve been waiting for you for over ten years, and finally, you’re back,” Gina said excitedly. “Especially your grandma. She’s been waiting for you all day.”

“Right. Your grandma is already in her sixties, and her health isn’t great. She really wanted toe with us to pick you up, but we finally convinced her to stay home,” Donald said as he led Olivia toward the town.

“I know a little about medicine. I can check on Grandma when we get there,” Olivia replied softly. In that moment, she really did look like a naive, innocent girl.

Gina seemed to be moved, showering Olivia with praise. “That’s so sweet of you, sweetheart. You’re such a thoughtful girl.”

Olivia lingered at the back as they entered town, her eyes quietly taking in the surroundings. She stayed silent with practiced timidity.

Donald was pretty satisfied with how she was acting now. Back in the city, Olivia’s whole vibe had always rubbed him the wrong way—she had that knowing little smile, like she could see right through people.

Right now, she just looked like a regr college girl, blending right in with all the other girls taken here.

Before long, they arrived at the Johnsons‘ ce–a sprawling three–story house they’d built with their own hands. In a town like this, it might as well have been a mansion, marking them as local royalty.

In the yard sat a grand wooden armchair, and on the table were tes of fresh fruit and a pile of sunflower seeds. It was obvious the family was livingfortably.

Suddenly, a little boy came running out, ring at Olivia. He rushed over and started hitting her, yelling, “Get out! No girls in my house. Go away. Now!”

Donald hadn’t expected his son toe charging out like that. He quickly pulled the boy off Olivia, but Bobby kept swinging his little fists, looking like he was ready to fight her off.

“Bobby, stop it!” Donald scolded, and then shouted angrily toward the house, “Sally, what’s wrong with you? Can’t you even keep an eye on a kid?”

Gina turned to check on Olivia. “Olivia, you’re not hurt, are you? Bobby’s just like that–he hits anyone he doesn’t know. There’s just no stopping him sometimes.”

“I’m so sorry!” The girl named Sally came rushing out, flustered. “I was in the middle of cooking and didn’t notice Mr. Johnson had slipped out…”

A sharp crack echoed as Donald’s palm struck Sally’s cheek, leaving an angry red mark. His voice was low, dangerous. “Next time, you won’t walk away.”

Sally pressed a hand to her stinging cheek, shoulders hunched. She didn’t dare to look up, but the light tremble in her frame gave her away.

Olivia lingered at the edges, observing the scene with quiet amusement.

Her so–called “real parents” were living like small–town nobility—a three–story house, a maid to cook and watch the kid, and their son being pampered like the sole heir to a vast family empire.

Olivia lifted her chin, one eyebrow arching as she gave a little scoff, clearly amused by the whole

    cene.
