Charlie drove to the administrative building of Aurous Hill University of Finance and Economics. Following the room number provided by security, he arrived at the office of the deputy dean of the School of Economics and Management.<h3 style="background-color:DodgerBlue">
After a brief moment of hesitation, Charlie knocked on the door.
After three knocks, he heard Hank’s voice from inside: “Pleasee in!”
Charlie opened the door and stepped inside. He noticed Hank, dressed smartly in a suit and sses, sitting at his desk engrossed in some documents. A few secondster, Hank set the file down, looked up, and appeared slightly surprised.
“Charlie? What brings you here?” Hank asked, his surprise evident.
Charlie noticed Hank’s astonishment and realized he didn’t connect him with the role of chairman of the Emgrand Group.
With a slight smile, Charlie replied earnestly, “Hello, Professor Hank. I had Doris Young arrange an appointment for me to see you.”
“Huh?!” Hank eximed, rising in shock. “Are you the chairman of the Emgrand Group?!”
Charlie nodded calmly. “Yes, Professor Hank, that is indeed my position.”
“I couldn’t believe it!” Hank said, still in disbelief. “Yesterday, while I was with your Aunt, she mentioned you were reputed for your feng shui skills. I had no idea you were also the chairman of such a majorpany!”
Charlie chuckled. “The feng shui title is more of a rumor among friends in Aurous Hill. I know a bit about it, but my main focus is business.”
Continuing, Charlie added, “Regarding my position as chairman of the Emgrand Group, I would appreciate it if you could keep it confidential. Even my wife and inws are unaware of my true identity, so please don’t mention it to anyone, especially not to Aunt.”
Hank, curious, asked, “How did you manage to keep such a significant secret from your wife and inws? Were theypletely unaware of the Emgrand Group’s establishment?”
“Although I currently own the Emgrand Group, it wasn’t actually founded by me. Thepany has been around for nearly a decade, and I only took control of itst summer. There are personal reasons that make itplicated to disclose this to my family right now,” Charlie exined.
After pondering for a moment, Hank nodded and said, “Alright, I promise not to share this information. But I’m curious—what brings you to me today?”
Charlie replied earnestly, “The ocean shipping industry has been thrivingtely, and I’m interested in investing in this sector. However, I’ve struggled to find the right managerial talent.”
He looked directly at Hank and continued, “Doris Young spoke very highly of you, mentioning your capabilities and respect in the field. I wanted to know if you would be interested in coborating with me.”
Hank listened carefully and gently shook his head, responding sincerely, “I appreciate the offer, but I must decline. Since my days at MIT, I’ve decided to step away from corporate work.”
Charlie was taken aback by Hank’s immediate rejection and probed further. “Professor Hank, if it’s a matter of finances, we can discuss that. Just tell me your number, and I’m sure we cane to an agreement.”
Hank shook his head again, “It’s not about the money. It’s a personal decision. After twenty years with several Fortune 500panies, I spent too much time trying to maximize profits, which felt increasingly meaningless. I’ve chosen to teach instead, as a way to find fulfillment in my work.”
Charlie, puzzled, asked, “Why does helping apany earn more feel boring? Isn’t teaching just another way to help cultivate talent for the future?”
With a slight smile, Hank replied, “To be honest, I’m not someone who is driven by money.”
