Zephyrine

I stood silently by the window, staring at the dark sky swallowing the empire. From here, I could see the pack members passing through the White Pack Gate, making their way to the duel arena already prepared for tonight’s fight.
To the death. That was what this duel was about.
I folded my arms across my chest, wondering what if I slip? What if I fail? What if my techniques are rusty, just like Lycannar said? What if…
My thoughts broke when the White Pack Gate swung open wide for a carriage to wheel inside.
My gaze sharpened. It was the same carriage Luna Tahlia had used. I leaned forward, watching as the wheels rolled to a stop. She alighted slowly, cloaked with her hood covering her face, and walked toward the dusk door.
A knock followed.
I turned as Blue quickly went to answer. The door opened, and Luna Tahlia stepped in.
“Zephyrine,” she called, hurrying to me with open arms. I embraced her, though confusion knotted in my chest. What is she doing here?
“Zephyrine, I came to say goodbye.”
Dessyn and Moon rose from where they had been sitting in silence, moving closer to listen.
“Why would you say goodbye now? The duel is about to start.”
She shook her head.
“You’ve done enough for me already. Standing against Yadev and her venomous daughter was victory in itself. The loyalists to the bloodline and Alpha’s seat have arranged for me to flee to another pack, to live quietly with Young ck.”
She took my hand before I could reply, patting it gently.
“I won’t be the reason you die, Zephyrine. If you refuse the duel as the Lycan King’s woman, they’ll let you go. I’ll be fine on my own.”
Her words fell heavy in the room. My chest tightened, but I squeezed her hand softly.
“Luna Tahlia… this isn’t just about survival. This is about clearing your name.”
She looked away, but I pressed on.
“They called you a slut. They said your son is a bastard. Will you be able to look into his and…”
“But I can’t have your death on my hands. What if you lose?” she trembled.

Moon stepped in, voice sharp and sure.
“She’s never lost a battle. Zephyr will win. All you have to do is trust her.”
“Moon…” I murmured, but he turned his face away, jaw set.

Luna Tahlia swallowed hard. I understood her hesitation. I wouldn’t entrust my life and my child’s to a stranger either.
She let out a shaky sigh and walked to the window/ gazing out as though weighing the world.
“You’re right. For Young ck… I have to believe in you and stay.” She turned back, sping my hand with desperate strength. “Promise me, Zephyrine. You will win at all costs.”
Goosebumps prickled my skin. I nodded.
“My life is also on the line. I’m far too young to die. Besides… I still have a sexy man to enjoy first.”
Her lips curved into a small smile, easing the tension.
Then came footsteps and a knock. Blue opened the door to reveal Alpha Auedric, already dressed for the arena, his beta at his side.
“The duel will begin soon. We should leave.”
I nced at Luna Tahlia, and she nodded. Together, we walked out. In her carriage, her young son sat beside his grandmother. Olga greeted me warmly, and I returned the smile before turning to Blue.
“You take the boy when we get to the arena.”
“Yes, mydy.”
For a moment, I wondered if Lycannar would be there but perhaps this was strictly werewolf business.
Alpha Auedric caught my gaze, his confident smile steady. He already knew who I was, and that trust in his eyes made my throat tighten.
“You should win one more, Zephyrine.”
I swallowed and nodded.
I didn’t take my horse. Instead, I climbed into my carriage with Dessyn and Blue, while Moon rode with Auedric. Luna Tahlia joined us as well.
The wheels turned, carrying us beyond the pack grounds toward the arena, a ce where blood was meant to be shed and life meant to be taken.
But whose life? Whose blood?
That question followed me the entire way.
