The time seemed to stop. Everything halted when those eyes locked onto mine. I was the woman who had never been afraid, who never allowed guilt to touch her but in that moment, something shifted.

It was as though I had betrayed him in the worst way, and my heart shattered. Sharply, I pulled my hand away from Nyroth and swallowed hard.

What was I even thinking? For a fleeting second, the mate bond had clouded my judgment.

I breathed, turning to see Lycannar still standing there. I had thought he’d leave, that he might turn and walk away but today, he didn’t.

“Lycan…” I started, but he silenced me with a tender kiss. I tasted him again after a week of longing.

Gently, his hand came to my waist, the other cupping my cheek as he kissed me softly.

After <i>a </i>few seconds, he pulled back and stared into my eyes. Slowly, I lowered my gaze. I had feared neglect, but it seemed he hadn’t forgotten me.

Lycannar’s hand moved to mine, the same one Nyroth had held, and he caressed it tenderly, never breaking

    eye contact.

“You let him touch what’s mine.” His voice was soft, yet threaded with a warning that made me lift my eyes to meet his. Pale–gold, his eyes shimmered with danger.

I was about to respond when I noticed his face was paler than usual, as if he had been ill and only recently recovered.

    “Lycan…”

“Just because you smashed her doesn’t mean she’s yours.” Nyroth’s voice cut in before I could ask Lycannar about his pallor.

“She is my mate. I suppose she didn’t tell you that,” Nyroth added, smug.

I froze. Lycannar’s eyes remained locked on mine, ignoring Nyroth’s words entirely.

“Smash?” he repeated, a faint frown crossing his features. The same innocent surprise I remembered. “That’s the word your mate uses, Zephyrine? Smash?”

Heat flushed my cheeks. Nyroth had never shown me respect. I lowered my gaze.

    “Let’s go inside, Lycan.”

“You can’t go anywhere with him, Zeph. We are still having a conversation.” Nyroth’s voice returned, and I almost shot him a re. He clearly had no idea how dangerous Lycannar truly is or what he is capable of.

“And yet you don’t want me to remove him?” Lycannar asked softly. My throat tightened. He rarely spoke directly to anyone else. Perhaps that was part of the curse he carried.

“Lycannar…” I tried, but he had already released his hold on me.

“I should go,” he said, exhaustion threading his tone, and turned toward the exit.

That was when I felt it. Weakness. Something unspoken but undeniable. I watched him take a step, about to leave, when I screamed.

    “Lycan!”

He didn’t stop, despite my voice loud enough.

“You should let him go, Zeph. I am here for you/I will make up for everything I have done and…” Nyroth reached for my hand again, but I flung it off angrily.

“Don’t touch me.” I pivoted, rushing toward Lycannar, blocking his path. My jaw set as he halted. I could feel the audience, but I didn’t care.

“You cannot walk away from me, Lycan,” I said curtly. He nodded but remained silent.

Frustration coiled inside me. His pale–gold eyes, now shifting toward grey, said more than words ever could. I felt desperation spike.

“I’m not letting you go, Lycannar. You will stay.”

He went silent, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. When he spoke, his voice was soft.

“I’m not walking away. I just have to return to my tower.”

“Lycan…” I reached for him, noticing the pallor again. “You’re pale.”

“I’m fine. Don’t touch me.” His voice sharpened, and he stared at me with an almost angry intensity. “Consider that mate of yours lucky this time.”

Bypassing me, he headed out, mounting his horse. A cold chill ran down my spine. Don’t touch me. The words sank deeper than any rejection could, sending goosebumps across my skin.

For days I had been unwell, but the weight of his rejection intensified the pain. My knees wobbled, dizziness blurred my vision but still, I ran after him

He was about to mount when I called, voice cracking,

“Lycan…” I called, but he didn’t pause. Instead, he moved to mount, and my knees gave way. I copsed to the floor, my head bowed.<fnceb5> Fresh chapters posted on Find[?]ovel</fnceb5>

What… what is happening? I wondered, panic rising as a trickle of blood dripped from my nostrils. Oh… oh<ol><li>no.</li></ol>

My eyes rolled back, and I felt myself falling t, but Lycannar was quicker. He caught me effortlessly, kneeling beside me. His touch, his presence, and the sound of his voice that came next felt like a warm dream on a cold night.

“Zephyrine?” he called softly, and I leaned against his chest, resting for the first time in what felt like forever.
