One kiss on my temple, and he walked out. I didn’t realize I had been holding my breath until he left the bedchamber. I stayed still, wondering what he would endure, what he would suffer, before he came back to

me.

The bustle from the living room pulled me back. I/could perceive Alpha Auedric’s scent, and then Moon’s voice reached me.

“I’m going too. I’ll have my horse ready.”

I froze at his words. No. Moon couldn’t make the journey to the Empire Grove. He couldn’t…

“You won’t be stopping me, so save your breath.” I heard him snap at someone, followed by the sound of the door closing.

Hurriedly, I rushed to the window. I saw him walking into the night toward the pack’s stables, determination in every step. I sagged my shoulders. He wouldn’t back down now. Not ever.

I lowered my gaze, thinking hard about the situation. Lycannar, the one I had met just days ago, who is not my fated mate, is willing to endure hell for me.

Moon, for whom I’d never shown anything beyond sisterly affection, was ready to cross fire and blood to help me.

Yet my fated mate, the one chosen by the moon goddess, had decided he would stay with his crush rather than me, who was dying.

“The kingdom can wait. We’ll stay here overnight,” Princess Serena’s voice interrupted my thoughts, and I blinked to see them.

Lycannar and his two elder sisters hade outside to say farewell. From where I stood, it was obvious their bond was unshakable, something no one could break.

“I’ll be back tomorrow night. You both don’t need to worry,” Lycannar assured them. Meare? nodded stiffly.

“I’m more worried about how you’ll deal in the grove. I heard it tampered with people’s sanity.”

“And you are the god of traumas. You’ve had thousands of them growing up, baby brother,” Serena muttered. Lycannar didn’t respond. At that moment, Moon pulled up on his horse, waiting ahead.

“I should go,” the Lycan King said softly,

I expected him to kiss his sisters goodbye, but he didn’t. It was as though he didn’t want it to look like a final farewell. He walked toward his horse and expertly mounted it.

Before I could blink, he was galloping out of the pack, his ever–mysterious bodyguard Chantel keeping pace. Moon followed.

I let out a shaky sigh as they disappeared from view and I whispered a small prayer.

“I’ll pass on dinner tonight, Blue. I’m tired, so I’m going to bed,” Dessyn’s voice pulled me back to reality as she walked in.

I turned to see her acting as if nothing were wrong. She moved further in, preparing for bed, and I nearly rolled my eyes in exhaustion.

“Dessyn, you should leave. I don’t want you to get infected.”

“Save your breath, best friend. I am not Nyroth who is afraid despite being an Alpha.”

I swallowed hard at her dismissal, watching her change into her nightgown. As she climbed into bed, I couldn’t help myself.

    “Dessyn, please…”

She paused, giving me her full attention, her eyes defiant, then shrugged.

“I’m not leaving you, Zephyr. We’re in everything together. You understand? If you’re worried about infection, Princess Mearez is here. She’ll cure me.”

No sooner had she spoken than the princesses stepped in. Mearez and Serena. Their presence felt almost too good to be true.

I took a step back, putting distance between us, and silence fell. Serena spoke first.

“My baby brother is such a thief. I can’t believe he bagged such a beautiful woman.”

“Lycannar isn’t that bad either,” Mearez replied with a smile, walking toward me and gently taking my elbow.

“Let’s get you to bed. You shouldn’t be standing.”

I pulled away, but she only smiled.

“It’s fine. The infection isn’t that lethal, and besides, my brother will bring back the cure. Everyone will drink the potion.”

I allowed her to help me into bed and watched as she wrapped me in a nket. Serena walked to the mirror and sighed.

“Lycannar is sacrificing too much for a woman who isn’t his mate. He even stepped into this chamber which has a mirror without fear,”

“She’s worth everything, Serena,” Mearez replied quietly, then turned to me with a soft smile. “Go on, sleep. I’ll stay by the bed, okay?”

I stared at her gentle face, then slowly turned to Serena, who stood by the mirror, her hands folded on her

    chest.

“Thank you for staying behind,” I said softly.

“No need. Pay us back by loving Lycannar,” Serena replied, then sat beside the bed. “You love him, don’t you?”

Silence fell. Dessyn cleared her throat, speaking for the first time since the Lycan princesses walked in.

“She must feel something for him to the extent that they’ve made love once,” she said.

    Serena nodded, then frowned.

“The man who just left, who is he anyway?”

Nyroth. I bit my lower lip as Dessyn answered.

“He’s her mate, Alpha Nyroth of Hue Pack.”

“What?!” Mearez eximed, rushing to my side. I nodded feebly. “My gods, does Lycannar know about it?”

    “I told him,” I admitted.

    “And?” Serena pressed.

“He was mad for a brief moment, then cooled off when I told him I’d go for rejection.”

“He’s going to kill him,” Serena muttered tly, and I swallowed.

“I won’t see Lycannar ever again if he dares kill anyone more for my sake. I won’t forgive him, and he knows it.”

Silence fell. Mearez patted my arm gently.

“He won’t do anything to make you angry. Lycannar knows how much you mean to him. You have nothing to worry about. Now close your eyes and sleep.”

Her soft voice, her gentle gesture, wrapped around me like a warm nket. I obeyed, and the moment I lowered my eyelids, I slept.
