“Zephyrine? Zephyrine?”

I fluttered my eyelids open, tired and heavy, to see Princess Mearez’s concerned face. She looked so worried that my chest ached. I saw her lips move, but I couldn’t focus. I couldn’t summon the energy to answer or even pay attention.

I tried to close my eyes again, but Serena came and nudged me gently.

“Zephyrine, you can’t sleep. Try to stay awake. It’s already dusk.”

Oh. I must have slept through the entire morning. I swallowed hard and spoke in a whisper, barely audible. Princess Mearez leaned in, straining to hear.

    “Lycan… is he… okay?”

She pulled back for a brief moment, then nodded,

“He will be fine. He will be here soon. You need to stay awake. You have to be strong.”

At that moment, Princess Serena turned toward the door, groaning with urgent concern.

“Is he not going toe? His pack isn’t that far away, is it?

I raised an eyebrow, curiosity flickering.

    Whose pack? Who else wasing?

The door opened then, and Dessyn rushed in, panting as though she’d been running non–stop.

“Alpha Nyroth isn’t at his pack. He’s at ckbridge Pack, and when I got there, it was, oh gods, through the window! He granted me an audience, and… my gods, he’s naked! Bare–chested!”

“And why isn’t he here with you?” Princess Mearez asked, her tone sharp.

    “He’s… with Ka.”

“Who is Ka?” Serena asked, her voice tight with curiosity. I turned away, letting out a shaky sigh. I already knew what Ka meant to him. How he gaze at her. How much I’d prayed, hoped, begged for Nyroth to look at me that way, but no. He never would. Not even once.

“She’s his mate. If he can channel a bit of energy to her wolf, it will ease her pain. But why won’t hee?”

“I can’t believe this is how mate bonds work in the Werewolf Empire,” Princess Mearez muttered to herself. I closed my eyes slowly, letting the words sink in.

Nyroth had failed me every single time I gave him a chance to prove himself. Every time, up until now, he failed again and again and chose Ka over me.

While I rot here, he finds the urge toy with her, even when the mate bond between us is still intact.

Moon, goddess, why would you fate me to such a man? Why? Even after I’ve saved your empire from demons and brought peace to the entire world, why will you pay me with…

My tired eyes drifted to the dark sky outside the window. The cold breeze swirling through sent a chill down my spine.

Lycannar… I wonder how he’s faring. Is he okay?

I was lost in thought when the distant sound of the White Pack’s gates opening reached me. The pounding of hooves brought my heart to a halt. The princesses and Dessyn rushed to the window.

“My gods. It’s my baby brother!” Serena eximed in awe.

They all rushed out. Footsteps echoed from the living room, carrying voices as well.

“My princess, I’ve made preparations for the potion,” Blue’s voice called.

“Lead me to the kitchen. Quick,” Princess Mearezmanded, and I heard the soft sound of kisses. Serena to Lycannar.

“Are you hurt anywhere?” Dessyn asked Moon, but he didn’t respond. His footsteps receded instead.

    What happened?

I forced myself to sit up, turning toward

door. The approaching footsteps grew louder, each step

melting the chill in my chest and recing it with warmth.

Finally, he appeared in the doorway. I forgot to breathe for a moment.

    Lycannar.

He stood frozen for a heart–stopping second, his eyes locked on mine. I stared back. No scratches, no signs of the dangers he had faced at the empire grove.

Was the danger there exaggerated, or had he truly emerged unscathed?

“Lycan…” I whispered softly. He stepped forward, then paused. His eyes dropped to my hand, and I felt him recoil.

Coldness surged suddenly, and my heart sank as he set his jaw and turned toward the exit.

“Lycan?!” I called after him, but he didn’t reply. The sound of his horse departing reached me momentster, and I bit my lower lip until it almost bled.

    My gods! What happened?

I tried to get out of bed, but my knees buckled, and I copsed to the floor just as Dessyn entered, rushing toward me.

    “Zephyr…”

“Let me go. I need to… I need to talk to him,” I said, exhaustion seeping into my voice. Dessyn helped me back to the bed.

“Lycannar,” I whispered, my voice almost gone. “He just left, and I don’t know why. I… I need to talk to him. I need to…”

“Zephyr!” she snapped, yanking me back to reality. I gasped, breathing hard. “What is wrong with you? He only left. He’lle back. Or you can go to him. Why are you trembling?”

    Am I… trembling?

I looked down at my hands. My knuckles were white.

And then it hit me. How much I fear losing Lycannar. I might not want to admit it, but he upies thergest, deepest ce in my heart now. The mate bond from the moon goddess means nothingpared to what I feel.

I leaned back against the pillow, quiet, my hands still trembling. He had looked at them. Definitely reminded of Nyroth holding my hands. Is he mad at me? Still?

Could he… be jealous of that? Oh no.
