Invitation 75

Caught in his own contradictions, Edward wrestled internally, torn between frustration and self–inflicted

    torment.

In the end, anger won out. His face darkened as he wiped the coffee spill from his lips.

“Macie sure has grown some nerve. Four days in a row with this attitude. Has she forgotten who she is?” Edward scoffed under his breath. “With that temper, any other family would’ve kicked her out long ago. She has no family background and still doesn’t know how to hold on to her ce as Mrs. Fowler.

“If she won’t even open her mouth to talk properly, what’s the point of having one? This was all her fault, yet she acts like the whole world owes her something.”

Nathan, standing nearby, silently observed Edward, who had now fully transformed into a bitter, ining husband. His lips twitched as he stared at the ceiling, barely restraining his disbelief.

Every word Edward spoke was full of resentment and disdain. Yet, this was the same man who had spent his entire drunken afternoon desperately trying to call Macie. Now, after a nap, he was suddenly refusing

    to acknowledge it.

“Mr. Fowler, since you’re sober now, you should review and sign the documents you left unfinished this morning. You have no other scheduled ns this afternoon, so you can clock out on time,” Nathan

    reminded him.

Edward tossed the wet wipe aside. “Give me any schedule for tomorrow. I’m working overtime tonight.”

He didn’t see a point in clocking out on time. After all, he would have to just go home and stare at an empty house.

Sharon had beening backtetely, and Macie wasn’t around either. Once Sharon moved out, it would be just him, alone again, every night.

“Didn’t you leave early every day before? I started pushing your afternoon tasks to the following day because of that,” Nathan pointed out.

Edward opened his mouth to respond but hesitated.

It was because Macie had just been discharged from the hospital. He had rushed home to catch her in

time to shop for groceries and cook together.

But he thought that saying that out loud would be strange. It would sound like he had deliberately adjusted his schedule to go grocery shopping with her.

“I said that I’m workingte, so just do what I say. Why ask so many questions?” Edward snapped irritably.

Nathan shrugged. “Alright then, Mr. Fowler. Whatever you say.”

He turned to leave and was about to step out when Edward suddenly spoke again. “Find time to visit the hospital. See when Macie is getting discharged.”

After a brief pause, he quickly added, his tone harsh as he said, “Tell her to return home already. Does she think that money for the hospital bills grows on trees? She doesn’t even have a job. All she does is spend

money.” <fn0d7c> The source of th?s content is findnovel</fn0d7c>

Nathan could hardly believe it. Edward just spent nine million dors on a ne for a model, yet he is fussing over Macie’s hospital bills.

He was at aplete loss. Even as a man himself, he couldn’t help but think that Edward was an absolute scumbag.

“Apologies, Mr. Fowler. I’m busy this afternoon and won’t have time to go to the hospital,” Nathan replied

    bluntly.

Edward frowned. “What are you so busy with?”

“I have to check in with the administrative department, coordinate the conference room schedule, and handle the paperwork once you finish signing everything,” Nathan said, pretending to think.

<b>“</b>You can’t spare even some time? I won’t deduct it from your attendance. Your full sry is intact,”

    Edward reassured him.

Nathan gave him a deadpan look. “Mr. Fowler, you already docked all my attendance bonuses this month.

    ”

“Right… Yeah, I forgot about that.”

“If you’re that concerned, you should visit her yourself. You’re free after work, after all,” Nathan added as

    he reached the door.

Just before stepping out, he paused, nced back, and said, “Mr. Fowler, you should stop lying to yourself. Or else, you’ll regret it when it’s toote.”
