Invitation 97

In the passenger seat, Nathan heard Edward sobbing and shouting,

Frowning, Nathan sighed inwardly. If Edward knew that it woulde to this, why had he been so sure of himself before?

Just days ago, Nathan had warned him to be honest with himself, but Edward had insisted he’d never regret his choices.

No matter how much Edward begged or cried at the Fowler residence, Yosef refused to waver. Any thoughts of reconciling Edward and Macie had beenpletely snuffed out.

The call was ruthlessly ended. Before hanging up, Yosef left him with only one cold remark. “You’re not good enough for May.” 1

In the backseat, Edward redialed the number, but his grandfather refused to answer the call. It was only then that Edward’s heart truly shattered, and regret crashed over him in waves.

The man who was always so stoic andposed now broke down in anguish. His cries were raw and desperate, like a lost puppy abandoned on the side of the road. He clutched his head and was unable to hold back his tears.

In the heart of the city’s bustling business district, Macie stepped out of the cab. She tilted her head back to take in the towering skyscraper where Julian’spany upied the entire 12th floor.

As she walked forward, she let the moment sink in. This was the start of a new chapter. From that day, she was officially part of the workforce.

A message popped up on her phone. While waiting for the elevator, she pulled it out and saw Julian’s text. He asked her where she was.

Macie replied that she was in the lobby. It was rush hour, so she needed to wait a bit for the elevator, but she had factored in extra time before the interview. A slight dy wouldn’t be an issue.

Julian responded with a simple “Okay.”

Macie locked her phone and waited.

Three minutester, a clear voice sounded behind her.

She instinctively turned around. “Julian?” she said, surprised.

    “Over here. This way’s faster.”

He waved at her, his smile warm.

Without hesitation, Macie walked toward Julian.

The crowd waiting for the elevator nced over. They noticed a handsome guy standing by the entrance to the

private elevator–the one reserved forpany executives and upper management with an ess card.

The crowd couldn’t help but envy the woman he’d called over.

“Mr. Atkins? Is that really him?” someone whispered as the private elevator doors slid shut.

“Who’s the woman he just came down to meet? From behind, she looks pretty young.”

“I think I heard him call her name, but I didn’t catch it. She’s definitely not an employee. She’s probably a

    business partner or something.”

    Spection buzzed among the employees.

Inside the private elevator, Macie nced at Julian. “Why’d youe down to get me? I could’ve just gone up

    by myself.”

“The public elevator is packed, and it would’ve taken forever. I’ll have them issue you an ess card so you can

use this one from now on,” he said.

“It sounds like there are some conditions attached to that. I don’t want any special treatment. The public one’s

    fine,” Macie said.

She hadn’t worked in an office before, but after seeing Julian swipe his ess card, she could tell that this

    elevator was reserved for executives.

Julian smiled. “It’s not special treatment. You’re a shareholder. It’s one of your perks.”

She understood his exnation and didn’t refuse anymore.

The private elevator was spacious, its interior sleek and spotless. The polished metal doors reflected their

images, and Julian took a brief nce at her.

“You look great today. That outfit really suits you,” heplimented her.

She nced down at her outfit. She wore nude heels, a khaki skirt suit, and a white blouse.

“As long as it looks appropriate, that’s all that matters. It’s been a while since I’ve dressed formally,” she said,

    her smile faint.

Julian didn’t think much of it. After all, Macie had spent thest two years traveling abroad, so it made sense <fn274f> Fresh chapters posted on </fn274f>
