?Chapter 1378:
Caught off guard, Alexander faltered for a moment before regaining hisposure with an easy grin. “Dani, I was just helping manage your staff. I didn’t expect you so soon.”
Dani turned her eyes on Dexter, silently instructing him to step behind her. Then she faced Alexander, tone sharp. “And who gave you authority over my team? Perhaps I have been too lenient. This is mypany, and Dexter is my HR manager. You are standing in our recruitment hall—he makes the calls here. Any objections?”
Her wordsnded like a p, stripping away his presumed courtesy. Alexander’s stomach twisted as bitterness rose in his throat.
Drawing a tense breath, he said, “Dani, I only wanted to help. I heard youunched thispany and wanted to support you. When your staff was rude, I stepped in for you. I wasn’t trying to start trouble—please don’t misunderstand.”
Dani ignored him, her voice remaining icecold as she addressed Dexter. “He’s here to apply for a position, correct?”
Dexter gave a firm nod. Dani tilted her head. “And your conclusion?”
Without hesitation, Dexter replied, “He’s not a fit.”
To Alexander’s surprise, Dani did not press for details. She turned back to him and said, “You heard him. My HR manager says you’re not a fit.”
Alexander froze for a moment, then managed, “Why not? What’s the reason?”
Dani held his stare without flinching. “Does there have to be one? This is mypany, and Dexter’s the HR manager. If he says you’re not a fit, that’s the end of it. What more do you want?” Her dismissive tone left no room for argument; it was maddeningly final.
Alexander had noeback. He stood frozen, dumbstruck, as Dexter watched Dani with wide eyes, visibly stunned by the force of her authority.
Without another word, Alexander turned and stormed off, his chest tight with rage and indignation. Dexter stepped forward and cleared his throat. “I’m sorry.”
Dani gave him a sidelong nce. “What are you apologizing for?”

He lowered his voice. “Based purely on qualifications, Alexander does check all the boxes.”
Dani’s brows knitted together in confusion. “Then why did you turn him down?”
Dexter hesitated before replying, “I’m biased. I don’t want to hire him. He isn’t here for the job—he’s here for you.”
Dani’s eyes narrowed. “So you rejected Alexander to defend Cedric?”
Dexter nodded sincerely. “Yes.”
Dexter couldn’t shake the guilt gnawing at him after rejecting a candidate who, on paper, was practically perfect for the job. Remorse lingered in his expression like a shadow.
Dani caught sight of his conflicted look and let out a softugh. “Starting to regret it?”
“Not in the slightest,” Dexter replied, his voice steady and sincere. “Even if I had to do it again, I’d still turn Alexander down the same way.”
She gave a small, approving nod. “Good.”
That single word made him hesitate before she added quickly, “Alexander wasn’t honest. He had an agenda, and it wasn’t this job. You were absolutely right to shut him down.”
