    Later that night, Shaun woke up. He was extremely weak and barely able to wiggle his fingers.


    “Shaun, are you awake?” Tracy, noticing his stirring, whispered gently. Shaun’s mouth felt dry. He tried to respond, only to realize he had a breathing mask on.


    Tracy reassured him. “The caregiver just stepped out to the restroom. He’ll be back shortly and can press the call button. There’s nothing to worry about.”


    Shaun understood what she meant and nodded.


    She then said earnestly, “You saved my life. If not for you, I might not have made it. While you were unconscious just now, I prayed that if you woke up, I’d be ready to start anew with you. But you have to promise me you’ll marry me. So, will you?”


    Shaun felt a rush of excitement. He tried to speak, but his words came out muffled.


    Tracy understood him and nodded. “You will, right?”


    He nodded again and said faintly, “I will.”


    Tracy smiled. “Okay. I’ll wait for you to recover.”


    Just then, the caregiver returned. He saw Tracy and Shaun awake and promptly pressed the call button. Doctors and nurses quickly filed into the room to check on their condition.


    Dolores was brought into the interrogation room, terrified and in tears. She repeatedly said, “I want to see my dad and Lowell Ruiz. They’ll help me.”


    A police officer looked at her and responded, “We’ll bring your family here, and you can tell them whatever you wish. I’ll make sure they hear the truth.”


    His words only made Dolores feel worse. She had been caught before she could flee the country. She regretted not ensuring that Tracy and Shaun were dead. They still managed to call the police despite their severe injuries.


    Jayden arrived at the police station first, with Leon following after hearing the news.

    The officer responded grimly, “The baby didn’t make it.”


    Leon felt overwhelmed, his world crumbling as he nearly copsed. When Shaun’s parents arrived, the longstanding friendship between the two families didn’t spare Leon from their confrontations. Leon knew he was in a precarious position and remained silent, waiting for Lowell’s arrival.
