Dessyn coughed gently, then shifted closer beside me. When she tried it again, I turned and stared.
“What again?”

It was as if she had been waiting for that question. She turned fully toward me while the carriage wheeled toward White Pack.
“So… how did he react to the news?”
I nearly scoffed.
“I should have known you’d want the story.”
“The full story,” she pressed eagerly. “I mean, you’re an Alpha and no longer tied to any man, Zephyr. You’re an Ashmere. That’s overwhelming. You’re a jackpot for every man who could have you.”
Those words sank into me and I smiled, almost sadly.
“And to Lycannar?”
She hesitated, then nodded.
“Apex is a jackpot too. A man women would kill for. He’s a king, he’s wealthy, handsome…”
“And a warlord,” I added softly, watching her flinch. “And Apex is also his real name.”
She froze, staring at me. After a few seconds she swallowed, looked away, and sighed.
“He definitely looks like a warrior. That broad shoulder, solid chest, strong forearm… I wonder what it’d be like to lean on him and…” She got lost in her words until she noticed my stare. I couldn’t believe she said all
that.
“Dessyn!”
She jerked back, clearing her throat.
“I’m… I’m sorry. Forgive me. But you can’t me me. He’s such a sexy man, why would you…”
“Dessyn!”
She looked away, sealing her lips. Itsted only a few seconds before she turned back to me again.
“So, how did he react to your true identity?”
At that, I shrugged lightly.
“He already knew I was an Alpha, so that didn’t surprise him. But the Ashmere truth… that stunned him. We talked into the night.”
“And…”

She wanted the full story. I stared at her briefly, lowering my gaze, unwilling to share the part about demons
with her.
“And nothing. We made love and just… slept off.”
Dessyn went silent. I searched her eyes, wondering why she had gone mute.
“Love? I thought you said you were abiding by the Moon Goddess‘ wishes.”
At that, I realized I had slipped. But when I looked into her eyes again; I saw realization dawn, followed by a slow smile before she shoved me yfully.
“Lucky you. I can’t believe you did that before me.”
I shook my head and looked out the carriage window with a sigh. She was such a crazy fellow.
She called to me again, but I ignored her. Just then, I spotted the carriage waiting ahead. A small frown drew on my face when I recognized it.
“Isn’t that Nyroth?” Dessyn asked. I turned to her in surprise. She had seen him too. “What does he want from you again after everything he’s done?”
I didn’t respond. My jaw tightened as the carriage slowed when Nyroth stepped into the road.
“Zeph?” He came to the window, calling my name, but I didn’t answer.
Jurrek, riding alongside on horseback, saw my disinterest. He nodded to the coachman to keep going.
The carriage rolled past Nyroth without a word. I exhaled softly once he was left behind. Such a pain in my life. I was d, relieved, I had rejected him.
I leaned back in my seat, only to find Dessyn staring at me in silence.
“You know Nyroth is also a hard man. Persistent. When he was in love with Ka, he waited five whole years for her to return. Starved himself of sex just to keep himself faithful to her.”
“You don’t know Lycannar, do you?” I murmured. “He’s not a man who wastes time being patient. He takes whatever he wants, whenever he wants. A man like Nyroth is no match for him.”
“What about for you?” she asked softly, all jokes gone. “Do you think you can handle Nyroth? I know how much you love the Lycan King now… but Zephyr, apart from Nyroth’s stupid attitude, you know he was your first love.”
My chest tightened at her words. She had seen straight through my brave expression and struck the nail on
the head.
Before I could reply, the carriage wheeled to a stop before the Dusk household. I stepped out before Jurrek coulde over to help.
“Pack sweet pack,” Dessyn breathed.
“Home sweet home,” I replied.

We stepped into the living room, me already tired, when I froze in surprise at the doorway.

Delicious dishes sprawled across the table, and a few guests filled the room. Blue was busy setting the table, but the instant she saw me, she rushed over.
“Mydy…” she called, and I swallowed hard. How much I missed her.
“What’s going on? What’s the asion?”
“To congratte you for finally being free from a killing mate bond,” Dessyn answered from behind. I turned to stare at her. “It’s a surprise. I couldn’t tell you on the way.”
“Congrattions, Zephyr.”
The voice came from behind me, and I turned. Moon. Gorgeous as always, handsome as ever.
He stepped forward, smiling, genuinely happy for me.
“I’m excited to see you finally free from the mate bond.”
Goosebumps rose on my skin when he stepped closer, reached for my fingers, and pulled me gently into his
arms.
He had always been like this, hugging/me without caring for the audience or my status. I rested my head on his chest.
Though he wasn’t as rugged, as solid, or as dangerous as Lycannar, Moon was his exact opposite. And just as I felt safe in Lycannar’s arms, I also felt safe in Moon’s but in a different way.
“I’m happy for you, Zephyr,” he whispered again, softly.
