Invitation 52

    Chapter 52

“What about the woman with wavy hair? You have to save her, too!” the elderly neighbor called out again.

“I already sent her to the hospital earlier,” Edward replied hastily, not catching her intention to pry for information. Without saying another word, he disappeared from sight.

Behind him, the small group of onlookers exchanged nces, their faces lighting up as if their guesses had been proven right.

They learned that the one who lived there permanently was actually his wife. Then the other woman

    must be…

And it seemed that the man clearly knew about the gas leak. Otherwise, why would he have sent that woman to the hospital first?

He even left his rightful wife to get out on her own and copse at the door.

They thought that Macie’s situation was pathetic and pitiful.

The man was handsome, but who knew that he was such a heartless, unfaithful scoundrel!

Edward sped toward the nearest hospital, calling Macie three or four times on the way, only for the calls

    to go unanswered.

“Damn it! Is there no nurse around? Can’t they just answer for her?” he cursed in frustration, only for his

words to get caught in his throat when he suddenly remembered that he had broken Macie’s phone into

    twost night.

Edward clenched his teeth, feeling his worry and fear intensify.

Sharon had still been conscious enough to call his name, but Macie had copsed outright and had to be

    taken away by an ambnce.

If not for some kind soul, then Macie would have…

Edward couldn’t even bear to finish the thought. Regret flooded him. He should have realized earlier that

the strange smell was a gas leak.

But he barely ever stepped into the kitchen. He mostly heated food in the microwave.

If only he had a little more basic life knowledge…

At the hospital, Edward rushed into the ER. The doctor, seeing his urgency, informed him, “Your girlfriend has been moved to a general ward-” 1

“Doctor! Where is the patient who just arrived by ambnce?” Both of them spoke at the same time.

Edward froze for a moment. The doctor, too, looked taken aback. He was surprised when he heard Edward mention the ambnce. He thought that Edward was talking about the wavy–haired woman.

“She’s not my girlfriend. She’s my wife. She’s in the ward, right? What’s the room number?” Edward asked quickly.

“Wait, who exactly are you talking about?” The doctor frowned.

“The woman who came by ambnce, not the one I brought in earlier,” Edward rified anxiously.

The doctor was confused by their rtionship. So the second woman was the wife? Then the first one was… the girlfriend?

“The patient is in critical care. It’s gas poisoning,” the doctor said.

Edward’s entire body went rigid, and his eyes widened in shock.

    Macie had gas poisoning!

Sharon had only inhaled a small amount, but Macie had…

Following the doctor’s directions, Edward rushed to the emergency room and stood outside for nearly an hour, wracked with guilt, anxiety, and torment.

If only he had brought Macie to the hospital with him from the start….

Finally, the emergency room doors opened. Edward hurried forward, desperate for an update.

The doctor removed his mask and exined, “After hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the patient has been

    stabilized.”

Edward felt the tension in his back finally rx. His shoulders slumped in relief.

“Are you the patient’s family?” the doctor asked.

“Yes. I’m her husband,” Edward replied.

“Do you realize that if she had been brought in just a few minutester, she would have gone into cardiac failure and suffered brain death? Gas poisoning is no joke. It took ten minutes to render her unconscious. 15 minutes, and she’ll be in shock,” the doctor warned sternly.

Edward’s expression froze, a mix of anguish and regret shing across his face.

Macie had almost died because he hadn’t gotten her medical attention in time.

She was transferred to a patient ward for observation. As no visitors were allowed inside, Edward could only stand by the ss window and stare inside.
